Product Description

Her Nonesuch debut is her first album of new material since the 300,000-selling, Grammy-winning "Wrecking Ball" of 1995 - and is an almost fully self-penneed effort. Produced by Malcolm Burn who engineered for Daniel Lanois on the last album, RED DIRT GIRL features Buddy Miller (guitar), Ethan Johns (guitar), Daryl Johnson (bass), Carlo Nuccio (drums). Recorded in New Orleans, the album includes a guest appearance by Dave Matthews (who duets oh "My Antonia"), plus vocal backup from Bruce Springsteen and Patty Scialfa ("Tragedy"), Kate McGarrigle, Jill Cuniff, and Patty Griffin.

Amazon.com

Consider this Emmylou Harris's emancipation proclamation--an album that confirms that 1995's adventurously atmospheric Wrecking Ball wasn't an aberration, but a preview of more radical changes to come. Long the godmother of alternative-country's traditionalist wing, Harris here writes songs with Luscious Jackson's Jill Cunniff, sings a duet with Dave Matthews ("My Antonia"), and recruits Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa to provide harmonies on the album's most compelling ballad ("Tragedy"). The production by Malcolm Burn applies sonic treatments of drum machines, shimmering guitars, and echoed vocals to a song cycle by Harris that is largely original and deeply personal, filled with dream imagery and evocations of a spiritual quest. While material such as "Michaelangelo" and "Bang the Drum Slowly" suffers from an arty ponderousness, it's doubtful that Harris has ever recorded an album that means more to her than this one. --Don McLeese

When a truely excellent recording appears that captures the essence of *a classic recording*,it is simple to review. This is simply one of,if not the best releases of 2000,and close to one of Emmylou Harris' best collection of songs ever recorded. It has taken her 5 years to follow the excellent *Wrecking Ball*with a collection of songs highlighted by the fact that all except one, have been penned by Ms Harris herself.A long overdue situation, that has you saying *Why so long?* and after listening to the emotion and quality exhibited in the lyric and melody here..that question becomes even more relevant.
It can hardly be said that Emmylou has been idle, from delivering a live album with the much travelled Spyboy, recording with her buddies Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt on Trio 2,and recording Western Wall with Linda Ronstadt and developing her song writing skills with the likes of Jill Cuniff from the rocking Luscious Jackson, and then to wrap it up appearing on Willie Nelson's *Teatro*..she has done it all.Whereas Wrecking Ball, one of the finest of 95 had songs from an impeccable cast of songwriters,Red Dirt Girl is Emmylou Harris. The first *star*.
She has long been the greatest alternative country rock, crossover diva,so much so that it doesnt matter what category critics put her in.This release increases her pedigree of being in a class of her own,but now she is seen as a developiong and evolving artist..and in her 50s!!The second *star*
The feel of this CD recaptures that ethereal sound and sonic explorations that distingushed Wrecking Ball, and revisits the production of Daniel Lanois, who so successful worked his magic on Wrecking Ball, and with U2 in the 80s and more recently with the Neville Brothers on *Yellow Moon* and in his own solo work. That was recorded in New Orleans, and she has returned again to New Orleans but this time with her Wrecking Ball engineer,Malcolm Burn..and the outcome is amazing. The third *star*
She continues to surround herself with excellent musicians. This time with a small band of troupadors, including guitarist Buddy Miller, jazzer turned Rolling Stones bassist Daryl Johnson and percussionist Ethan Johns.Notable in the backup harmonies and duet roles are Bruce Springsteen, and his wife Patty Scialfa. The effect is marvellous and the sound perfectly atuned to the heavenly vocals of Ms Harris. The fourth *star*.
What sets her apart from many in the celestial realms of modern or popular music, are the songs she sings and the voice that conveys a spectrum of emotions and feelings, from longing and pain to regret and life and joy..simply a unique voice that gets better with age. From the opening track*The Pearl* she releases the angelic vocals that convey a spiritual almost hymn like quality that stamps her authority on this collection. It is clear that if you like your songs energized from the heart and having that personal feel, that Jimmy Webb like quality ..this is for you.
From the sad and poignant lost loved one lyric of Bang The Drum Slowly,to the addictive and destructive compulsion of love,in I Dont Want to Talk About It Now,I defy anyone not to be moved. From the Celtic flavoured My Baby Needs A Shepard to the Springsteen like ballard Tragedy(which features Springsteen on harmonies)you are hynotized and carried along on this personal journey. The magic of the first take vocals of Michelangelo to the bitter taste of death and failed potential of the title track..this is a great experience.I personally warmed to One Big Love and the trilogy which concluded this collection.Every song perfectly selected and perfectly positioned. The fifth and possibly the most relevant*star*.
This is a classic album, like Roses In the Snow,or Luxury Liner..it is also a classic album like Hotel California and Sweetheart of the Rodeo..it is simply the best.Experience it,experience a truely unique talent.5 stars.

"Red Dirt Girl" is Emmylou Harris's first studio album since 1995's magnificent "Wrecking Ball." The wait has been worthwhile: it's every bit as ethereal, mournful, and beautiful as that album, but with a little more room to breathe production-wise. The main difference on this disc is that only one song is a cover, and the songs Emmylou has written are quite possibly her best ever. Normally, I like her writing, but she's such a fine purveyor of other writer's songs that her own work is usually overshadowed. Not the case here. These are magnificent songs that run the gamut from oral sex (boy, don't listen to THAT one for the first time while you're driving--I almost passed out!) to the magnficent "Bang the Drum Slowly" (co-written with Guy Clark). Suffice it to say you may need your tissues, but not for any trite, slick, or maudlin reason. This is the song so many hack Nashville writers aspire to. Yes, Bruce and Patti are here, but they sing backing vocals (on "Tragedy") and you might not even realize it's them until the end of the song. There's a debut with Dave Matthews that's inoffensive, but give me Bruce or even John Anderson over that guy anyday. This disc has made its debut at the top of my "Best of 2000" list, with only Warren Zevon's "Life'll Kill Ya" in close proximity. You'll be doing yourself a disservice if you don't get "Red Dirt Girl," the newest from a genuine American treasure.

Well hey, the whole world loves Emmylou Harris, doesn't it? She's weathered many a storm in the music "biz" and it's not just because she's pretty enough to be a film star. Musically, she's got the goods; personally, she's got the depth. We all know the girl's got a God-given voice, too. But the bottom line of Red Dirt Girl is not the movie star looks, the personal integrity or the beautiful voice - it's the songwriting, which is a combination of all her traits. Why anyone who writes as good she does would want to record another cover is an interesting question. Since "Boulder To Birmingham," she has shown what a strong writer she is and the fruition of that strength might be right here in this exceptional album. Covers and co-writes feature on this CD, too, but it's Harris' songwriting that dominates. Emmy's lyrics are both personal and curious here, her melodies steeped in tradition and transcendence and the overall impact of the album riveting as she seemingly holds back nothing, being both transparent and naked, revealing much about herself, yet still leaving the listener to wonder about much. Unlike all too few albums, this one is perpetually listenable.

Emmylou Harris was born to perform...a standout artist from the start. But, when she began performing her own material she advanced into a rare realm of the truly gifted. If Mark Twain had a guitar, he would have followed the lyrics of Emmylou as she puts a new star in the constellation of every genre of country music she performs. "Red Dirt Girl" so captured the spirit of life in struggling southern towns as ever did Harper Lee or Mark Twain. Just the reference to "Vietnam," brought a tear to my eye...but the headlines of today are still those found in the words of this song. I swear she sounds and appears more beautiful every time I hear or see her...the lure of a lovely siren on the ears of the earthbound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aural Textures
Reviewed in Australia on October 13, 2020
A brilliant continuation of Emmylou’s exploration of aural textures begun with Daniel Lanois in the seminal Wrecking Ball and now perhaps even more deeply imaginative in this album with Malcolm Burn. Her evocatively nuanced voice, ethereal and crystal clear, moves through complex washes of instrumentation perfectly matched to the essence of the songs which capture a wide spread of emotions and music genres . I especially like My Antonia, a duet with Dave Matthews,,for its direct rhythmic simplicity. The album will also test the resolution of your system; on some the complex mix can become murky and one dimensional; it shouldn’t!

5.0 out of 5 stars aussergewöhnlich in jeder Hinsicht!

....to praise this album.
Read this in a kind of Bruce Springsteen intro type voice...
We were on the way to a pantomime, I was the driver, so had access to the stereo controls on the steering column. Made my selection somewhat deftly, and Emmylou sang in the background. Michael Angelo and the volume went up a little.
My Father in Law asked who the artist was - I replied and added a little more volume. He asked "how would you classify this album" y'know, like rock, pop, etc.. I said I wouldn't classify it - it's too good to put in a box.
If you like singer songwriters, songs where you can not only hear the words but they mean something - this album is for you. We saw Emmylou recently, and she explained what the songs meant to her - and that's added another dimension. But don't be put off by Emmylou tags like "queen of alternative country". A truly great album.
