It's often said that this 1974 set, Ronstadt's true commercial breakthrough after a half decade's worth of minor hits, set the formula for the platinum successes to follow: some underrecognized singer/songwriter jewels, a couple of semi-obscure early rock tunes, always with something for country radio as well as Top 40 to grab hold of. But Heart Like a Wheel does it with a magic Ronstadt and her L.A. session crew would never touch again; for one thing, she was rarely again as convincingly tough ("You're No Good") or as fragile (the Anna McGarrigle-penned title track) as she is here. --Rickey Wright

I originally bought Heart Like A Wheel back in 1974, but the album eventually got tossed in the trash with the rest of my old vinyl. But with the recent release of Ronstadt's autobiography, Simple Dreams, and the revelation that she can no longer sing due to the onset of Parkinson's disease I began waxing nostalgic and ordered the CD from Amazon.
This is simply a great, great album; a masterful blend of country and rock without a single throw-away. Linda's singing is extraordinary throughout, ranging from angry anthems to tender ballads. What a set of pipes! And the music's as good as Ronstadt's voice. Some of the finest musicians of the period play on this album: Sneaky Pete Kleinow, J.D. Souther, Herb Pedersen, Chris Etheridge, David Lindley, Russ Kunkel, Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Timothy B. Schmit. Arranger and amazing multi-instrumentalist, Andrew Gold, plays on nine of the ten tracks. Gold's George Harrison-like guitar solo on "Your No Good" is a delight.
With Heart Like A Wheel, Ronstadt and producer Peter Asher created a country rock masterpiece, one of the seminal albums of the 70s. Her work on Heart Like A Wheel earned Ronstadt a nomination for the 1976 Best Pop Female Vocalist Grammy and the album was nominated for Album Of The Year. Her rendition of "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still In Love With You)" did win the Best Country Female Vocal Performance. It's certainly no surprise Heart Like A Wheel has held up so well over the years.
With Ronstadt once again in the news many will think about picking up a greatest hits compilation, which is fine, but if you're considering buying one of her albums, Heart Like A Wheel would be the best choice.
I recently bought the digital version of this to listen to on my gadgets.
I think what I like the most about this album is that it has a variety of styles. Like a ...country-folk rock-pop album. From Ronstadt's soulful, "You're No Good" to Hank Williams' old-country heartache song, "I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You" (with Emmy Lou Harris singing harmony), and then back to "When Will I Be Loved", Linda can belt it out from deep within, and, as a female you can feel the pain from every heartache that you've known while you listen to what she has to say. Her songs can drain you, but then as you keep listening, she builds you back up and gives you strength.
This is a great album for young female teens, as she let's you know that you can love someone and still be yourself, and not be afraid to say how you feel. On the album, Ronstadt will sing about her aching heart but then turn right around and express that you need to stand up, dust yourself off and move on.
The original Capitol version is actually not too bad, but the sound is tubby and unrefined. Heart Like a Wheel is also one of the four albums contained in the 2006 Capitol/EMI release The Best of Linda Ronstadt – The Capitol Years. That release unfortunately suffers from a fatiguing sound resulting from exaggerated high frequencies.
For comparison purposes I also included Linda Ronstadt’s Greatest Hits (1976) on DCC Compact Classics, which contains three tracks from Heart Like a Wheel. Until now, this was the best-sounding CD of early Linda Ronstadt music I owned.
This brings me to the RockBeat remaster. This disc is easily superior to the other two versions of the album I mentioned. The sound is clean and natural, and thoroughly enjoyable. The bonus tracks (the mono versions of the first two singles) are a welcome addition. I even marginally prefer the sound of the RockBeat remaster to the excellent DCC disc.
Congratulations and thank you, RockBeat Records.

The last 30 years or so I have been listening to this album on various CD editions. They have sounded good, but not sensational. However, now listening to this album in the new 180 gram vinyl edition, things really come to life. The sound is full and deeply engaging and even the minute details of the music are brought forward to give a very satisfying and totally imersing listening experience.
I now fully understand what all the renewed fuss for vinyl is about. It was a very long time since I was this engaged listeing to music - the sound is absolutely spectacular and the music of course is first class.
This album has been the starting point for my rediscovery of the vinyl record - still the greatest form for recorded music ever invented, despite all CD, SACD and streaming options. If you doubt this statement, consider that the recording technique to engrave a track on a disc was invented more than 100 years ago, but it still sounds this devastating today!
