Product Description

Los Lobos return with their first full-fledged set of new material since '92s Kiko. Working with longtime collaborators Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake, Los Lobos have created a set of tough sounding electric tunes that find the band's restless musical imagination taking in a variety of influences, from the rootsy to the surreal. "Mas y Mas" looks to be the first track to radio. One of the world's great live acts, the band will be touring extensively in support of the new LP. [Note: This product is an authorized CD-R and is manufactured on demand]

If Kiko was Los Lobos' unanticipated definitive statement, as in "You've got to hear this!" Colossal Head is its less focused addendum. It says: "Oh, yeah, and furthermore. The title track, a multi-textured grinder with a Middle Eastern string arrangement mixed in with baritone sax and blues guitar. "Life Is Good" is lazy, infectious '70s pop funk à la War and Sly & the Family Stone "Más y más" is an old-fashioned guitar wank that puts one in mind of the other crucial name in Latin rock--Santana. Los Lobos are known for their ensemble work, but this is just unstrained look-at-me showboating. When you've got David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas, why not flaunt 'em? The occasional missteps ("This Bird's Gonna Fly," "Can't Stop the Rain") are just bland songs the band and coproducers Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake dress up with the kind of offbeat production touches that worked so well with Kiko. --Steven Stolder

This release seems to me to be the logical follow up to the
amazing KIKO, and I believe that it is easily it's equal. Much
in the way I put KIKO on to go to sleep by, COLOSSAL HEAD is my
usual choice to wake up to. Both releases have moved from being
great music into the realm of magical, musical journeys into the
incredible. This starts us out with REVOLUTION, a song that gives
hint to the trip they will be taking us on. It moves on to the
hard rocking MAS Y MAS and it's excellent guitar work. The Latin
flavor comes through strong on MARICELA, a beautifully crafted
wonder. On to EVERYBODY LOVES A TRAIN, truly original, mixing
sung vocials with the spoken word. Very up beat tempo. A bluesy
number comes along with CAN'T STOP THE RAIN, the light and airy
LIFE IS GOOD, and bass driven LITTLE JAPAN, where layer upon
layer of sound pass through and intermingle with eachother. A
very heart felt offering. MANNY'S BONES, and COLOSSAL HEAD are
fun rockers with interesting lyrics. They end this thing with
some music reminiscient of old time Chicago blues on the final
track. Wonderful stuff. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Thanks and have fun,
Tom

I'm a "Johnny-come-lately" to the artistry of Los Lobos (I discovered them in 2011, so I was "only" about thirty years late to the party!) One of my friends recommended that I listen to Kiko and when I did I was completely blown away. How could I have missed such great music? I'm from Seattle and, back in the early-1990's, I was buried in grunge music. Somehow this great band from East L.A. managed to fly under my radar. I now finally realize how great Los Lobos are and I have collected all their albums-- and I listen to them religiously.
Being a musician, I can really appreciate well-crafted songs and the songwriting on Colossal Head is top-notch all the way through. On top of that, the music is more experimental and visceral than anything else Los Lobos have ever done. For me, Colossal Head is the second-best album (after Kiko) that Los Lobos have ever put out. This album is truly a colossus.

Buy this! One of my favorite albums by these guys. Every song is good, and they mix it up well with different tempos and instrumentation. The track "Mas Y Mas" is incredible. The back and forth with the baritone sax vs. David Hidalgo's ripping lead guitar is amazing. No wonder they are frequent guests of Eric Clapton at his Crossroads Guitar Festivals. (2004, 2007, and 2013) You should buy those as well while you are at it.

Different kind of stuff for the powerful Los Lobos band."Mas y mas" (More and More) is the ultimate stand out track for sure. But all of it is good for the ears, their Latino Mexican music especially, where they excell. "By the Light Of The Moon" is my favorite though. That lp is outstanding by far. This one is a tad more on the experimental side. Anyone unfamiliar with the power of Los Lobos would be surprised by their abilities which is so apparent live as in their appearances on Eric Clapton's"Crossroads" DVD.They make playing that powerfully good music look so effortless...whew! Somebody get me a towel!

This follow up to Kiko (one of Rock's greatest albums) essentially finds the band recording a superior collection of songs by playing their hearts out and singing their hearts out and then MESSING it all up with "experimental" production techniques that rob the songs of their quality and leave the listener frustrated. The experimentation of the Latin Playboys CDs rubs off on this CD and the music suffers for it. If you, like me, collect *all* Los Lobos CDs, then you should indeed have this one in your collection, but you'll be shaking your head when you listen to it. These songs are much better enjoyed live than in their studio versions which is sorta backwards from the norm. This is not a terrible album but it could have been a better album. The hard part of creating the album, the song writing and laying down the performances, were seemingly effortlessly reached by the band, but then one big mistake with production and fans are left with something that could have been much better. The band eventually (thank God) moved away from these silly production techniques and produced later albums that delivered on all points once again proving that they were the best (and most sensible) band in the USA.  Soul Disguise

I give every Los Lobos album five stars because every album is just as good as the last. It is impossible to rank their music any lower then five stars because it is simply that good and diverse. Album to album and song to song, one of the best bands in "rock" history. I use rock loosely because they do so much more then just rock. This album specifically was a joy to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mas y Mas !!!!!!!!!
