Stars fan since 2010-ish and some of the songs in this album are my faves.

I enjoyed parts of Five Ghosts simply because I like dark, moody music. But the problem was that it was far too repetitive. The opening track repeated the same line over and over, with more of the album following suit. To say I was nervous about The North would be an understatement.

Thankfully, I had no reason to be nervous. This is a terrific album that holds up well through multiple listenings. My favorite Stars album is still In Our Bedroom After the War, but The North comes very, very close. "The Theory of Relativity" opens up the album well and it only gets better. "Through the Mines" is an absolutely gorgeous track that I had to listen to five times before making my way through the rest of the album. Amy Millan's vocals are as good as ever and the soft background music is stunning. "The Loose Ends Will Make Knots" is another stunning song with terrific vocal work by Millan and Torquil Campbell, which is nothing new if your familiar with Stars. "A Song is a Weapon" is a very fun number, despite the obvious darker lyrics. This is another track I had to listen to multiple times during my first run with this album.

Overall, this is a fun album and one that deserves many playbacks.

Favorite tracks:
Through the Mines
The Loose Ends Will Make Knots
A Song is a Weapon
Do You Want to Die Together?

I find it humorous that Amazon has "Stars" listed in the Alternative Genre. I happened upon this group via free download, and one of their songs with my Kindle Fire and Amazon Prime. If you were ever in a record store back in the 80's and asked one of the eployees "what IS that you are playing that is so bad ass?". You bought the album and the group became one of your favorites. THIS is one of those groups. The album is an eclectic variation of different types of music and sounds, from modern electro infusions, to raw guitar and James Taylor esque ballads. That being said, each song seems to flow into the other througout the entire album. The pieces fit into a perfectley completed puzzle. I cannot wait to listen to some of their previously released albums, and will forever look forward to more from them. The songs are fresh, different, and there is really no genere for them to fit into. Alternative they are not. "Stars" they are, at least in my album collection.

I'm in the minority of Stars fans that really liked "Five Ghosts" but I absolutely love "The North". My defintite favorite Stars to date. It has everything that I love about Stars, there are 80's esque pop songs, lush beautiful songs, haunting songs and a perfect sharing of the vocals. Hold on When You Get Love, A Song is a Weapon, and The North were the standouts to me on the first listen but I truly don't think there is a weak link on this album. Stars are always good at marrying their visual presentation to their music but this one is a stand out, the cd packaging is very cool, the washed out vintagy looking photos are beautiful. Perfection, my favorite album purchase of 2012.

I am a HUGE fan of the Stars and I own every album. I love this album, especially because it's on vinyl! The vinyl album also comes with a free MP3 download, so I can listen to it when I'm away from my turn table. The album is classic Stars and once you start to listen it's hard to turn it off!

I'm not a detailed music reviewer. I've been listening to Stars off and on for a decade or so. This is my favorite album of theirs. More importantly, my wife hasn't found Stars particularly resonant, and she likes this album quite a bit. It served as a soundtrack to a long road trip. If you are interested in Stars you know what you are getting here. If you don't know Stars, but are interested in The Head and the Heart, Of Monsters and Men, or melodic indie rock check this out.

I recommend this album if you like any of the previous Stars albums. Also, if you like pop, indie, rock, etc then I also recommend it. It's got great lyrics and melodies that take plenty of unexpected turns. One of my favorite albums this year, and possibly one of my favorite of all time.

Great album with smart indie pop. It’s more complex and less sunny-happy than their earlier work. It really captures the feel of fall/winter in Canada and longing for friends, lovers, and connection to the outside world

Thank You!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another new direction, another beautiful album
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 1, 2013
I will never quite understand how the Stars do what they do.
This is their 6th full studio album and to me this is possibly the 4th change in sound they have gone through in that time.
Although one of their shorter albums it probably contains more 'crowd pleasers' than any of their other albums. I will admit I am totally enthralled by their sound and always have been since being 'subjected' the their lyrics and sounds whilst working with my cousin about 10 years ago.
Is this their best album yet? Honestly, probably not. Surely that has to be reserved for
Set Yourself On Fire  BUT this is still a five star album.
The Theory of Relativity is brilliant. Undoubtedly one of their best tracks in a few years. The lyrics are right up there with the best. The sound even better. I wasn't totally convinced by the title track ' The North '. Just not dreamy enough.
However there were other highlights. Do you want to die Together almost seems like a response to 'Personal' from the album 'In our bedroom after the war'. I can almost imagine the two people having found themselves then having that as their second topic of conversation. I don't know if it intentional but it is awesome either way.
Progress took me a while to warm too. Once I did I noticed a lot about the track. Its simple but melodic beat and the clever bass sounds.

Perhaps it is best if I just say that this album surprises. The Five Ghosts was a good album. I really liked it but I can't just put it on and chill. I used to be able to do that with all their music but that album didn't have the right feel. I couldn't drive through the night with it as my soundtrack. That's not to say it wasn't full of amazing music. It was it just wasn't what they usually do. The North however is an entirely different animal. I feel like it tells a story once more. It feels refreshed. It is new without harking back to the old but still staying familiar.

It is beautiful. I'd buy it if I were you or you'll always wonder what you missed.
