Editorial Reviews

Product Description

The revamping of the classic Steeley Dan catalog of orginal albums on CD continues with a truly revered album. Complete with upgraded, state of the art sounds, complete original art, notes and lyrics, plus newly penned liner notes by none other than Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the Dan themselves.

Amazon.com

Ever the primary conceit of mainstays Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, 1976's The Royal Scam marks the first time the Steely Dan duo actually owned up to the fact. Musically, it's their edgiest, most guitar-driven record (thanks to Becker and a murderer's row of session greats that includes Larry Carlton, Elliot Randall, Dean Parks, and Denny Dias). Lyrically, the songs cut an ever-sardonic, presciently discomforting slice of modern life that was a couple decades ahead of the game (who else was extolling the virtues of condom-couture, à la "The Fez," mid-Me Decade?). Though it didn't garner the radio attention of Aja, its more jazz-suffused, multiplatinum follow-up, Scam boasts a diverse, occasionally muscular musical rhetoric and some of the Dan's most telling portraits (the deranged, yet all-too-familiar killer of "Don't Take Me Alive," "Kid Charlemagne"'s drug-culture celebrity, the tropical convenience of a "Haitian Divorce"). Small wonder many Dan fans consider it their best. --Jerry McCulley

shimmering harmonies, and indelible vocals
5 Stars
shimmering harmonies, and indelible vocals
Outlaw drug designers, neolithic painters, homicidal maniacs, false prophets, libidinous divorcées: a glance at the characters confirms it's another tour through the modern wasteland conceived and vividly realized by Steely Dan. By 1975, the group was distilled to songwriters Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, abetted by producer Gary Katz and engineer Roger Nichols who focused solely on studio recordings with a shifting repertory of the best musicians they could find. The Royal Scam, their fifth album, reels smartly from the Owsley-like antihero of "Kid Charlemagne" to the cornered psychopath of "Don't Take Me Alive," dissects the American nightmare from the immigrant's marginalized perspective on the title song, and captures the most leering guitar solo in history on "Haitian Divorce." As always, the chaos is harnessed in seductive melodies, shimmering harmonies, and indelible vocals from Fagen, decorated with stellar work from the A-team players. --Sam Sutherland

One of my favorite albums, even if the Steely Dan police say it wasn't good.

Lately I have been drinking in remastered Cd's like a pre-menopausal woman absorbing the oh so tawdry 50 Shades of Grey series prior to a hot bath. I am hopelessly hooked on updating my collection and it usually feels so good doing so. "Usually" is the key word here. The Royal Scam is a well done remaster as is the entire Steely Dan catalogue. Please see my other reviews for instances IMHO of less than acceptable remasters.

Donald Fagan and Walter Becker were perfectionists when it came to their music as any true SD fan is aware. They were probably one of the 1st artists to do a complete remastering revamp of their catalogue. (1999) The Royal Scam is no exception.

I listen to my music by headphone. As I moved up the scale regarding headphone quality (AKG550's currently) I noticed most of my MP3's sounded really bad. Hence my quest to relive my youth with the best quality sounding music possible.

I found that buying ready-made music files was convenient but the quality of files varies - A LOT. Buying remastered CD's allows me to control quality of sound by ripping them lossless...... I could go on and on about what is the best way to rip but there are too many factors to cover in this review.

Buying and ripping is actually in most cases more cost effective than buying direct. Anyway, the whole Steely Dan catalogue is well done and no regrets here in purchasing, may be a little bright for some but overall......... sonic brilliance. Bon appetite my friends

The Royal Scam is awesome. The condition of the album was a C minus. Rated very good at purchase. There’s allot of in groove distortion which means it was played by a sub par stylus for a longtime. A skip on side 2 that I think I have polished out with a disc washer D-4. I use an expensive stylus on my refurbished Marantz. I do have technics M-94 I can put on that’s more forgiving with flawed albums. It’s already mounted on a spare head perfectly aligned. But the bottom line is that I might be way to picky to but used vinyl on line. I’ve purchased a few 180 gram LP’s. I think I’ll stay on that roll. I have a bunch of albums in all Genres from back in the day. I do airplay as well on an amp that’s got Bluetooth capability and a phono pre amp. It’s the bomb Onkyo nr6. Check that bad boy out. Best I’ve ever and hooked up to Definitive towers and surrounds with a Klipsh sub.
So yeah I’m picky

I recently bought The Royal Scam along with two other dan favs Katy Lied and Pretzel Logic. I have to say that this album is fast becoming my favorite. I own all of Steely Dan's quote classic albums and in my opinion The Royal Scam has it all. All the tunes are perfect creations melding rock guitars jazzy keys and horns with phat R&B and funk grooves. By this time the bands sound had definitely changed from the early 70's sound of Can't Buy a Trill & Countdown. I would say that Becker & Fagen where feeling the influence of funk and disco into their rock sounding stuff, check out "The Fez" my favorite tune and probably the funkiest groove on the album. I actually like this album better then Aja. Also the remastered version sounds awesome! the drums and bass are really fat but clean and clear and the vocals are a thing of beauty, perfectly sung and blended and expertly recorded and mixed. If your new to Steely Dan this wouldnt be a bad place to start cause the whole album jams with intensity. I can listen from start to finish.

Amazing album, but I’m here to comment on the seller. I bought it used, but there was a skip during Dont take me Alive which is halfway through the first side. I was not happy. I decided to write the seller, and she made it right…refunded my money. I’m rating this 4 *s for the seller being good to work with.

Every song is a classic, to me. The recording sound quality is awesome, the song-writing SO unique, jazzy, yet accessible, that any self-proclaimed aficionado of the group NEEDS it. It's not really an option. Songs like 'The Caves of Altamira' will sadly never be played on the radio, but once heard, one wonders how they lived without the memory. This CD has enough classic Steely Dan sound, and sophisticated instrumentation, including superb solo performances, that even someone that only likes the 'hits' probably won't turn it off, and will see Steely Dan in an entirely different way. 'Don't take me alive' DID get airtime, and is a personal favorite only found on this CD, to my knowledge, (someone more knowing may enlighten me.) I sure looked in a lot of places, and was SO glad I bought this CD just for that song. That song alone was worth what I paid for it, and the rest makes it nearly priceless to me. Mine ISN'T for sale anymore.
