I have loved this band since I first heard their music when I was a small child! Thrilled to find this CD set so I can hear their music again as an adult. Great CD set. Highly recommend this seller!

33 minutes of music approximately. The sound is very good-clean and with some of the warmth associated with the original vinyl pressing (which I still own). The disc is snapped inside a tri-fold cardboard holder, which contains a short but informative essay on the group and the album by Dominic Priore. The original b&w back cover is also here inside the tri-fold holder. This album is actually somewhere between 3-3 1/2 or 4 "stars", depending on your nostalgia level and how highly you rate the music.

Well, a small wrong has been finally righted. Instead of the previous releases which were a collection of tracks from various albums, we have the original album with all the tracks in straight order. Never a first run band, THE STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK were (and continue to be) known primarily for the one track (a number 1 hit in 1967) we all know-"Incense and Peppermints"-a song that comes to mind when you think of the late 60's and the "Summer of Love", Hippies, tie-dye shirts, love beads, and all the rest.

One look at the wonderfully evocative, period cover photo will tell you a lot about the music and the era. The music was a mix of fuzz-toned guitars, cheesy organ, vibraphone, flute, and some close harmony singing-all wrapped up in the pop/psychedelic sound of the era . That and the fact that their one hit record was sung by a non-band member (Chris Mumford from SHAPES OF SOUND), who was hanging around the studio that day. But all that adds up to some fun, cool music-even if it was a bit lightweight. But if you listen to "Unwind With The Clock", a jazzy instrumental/vocal (a track that is always left off compilations), or "The World's On Fire", you hear another side to this band-they had more chops than many thought.

For a short time THE STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK were one of the main attractions in the L.A./Sunset Blvd area. A number of people started digging their music, hoping the psychedelic vibrations would continue a while longer. But it wasn't to be. The whole Sunset Blvd. club thing was outlawed, and everybody scattered to new places for their musical fix and everything else. But, finally, we have one of the original artifacts from that wonderful, exciting, weird era. Listening to this does bring back some good memories of growing up during that period when everything was seemingly new and vital. And that makes this release of the original album all the more important. Admittedly if you weren't there you'll hear it with slightly different ears, but this band/music/ Single was a part of the times.

As I said-a small wrong has been made right-it's good to know that I now own one of the small but important musical artifacts of that time, when it seemed there was something new to hear every week. A small but important piece of the puzzle is now in place. Enjoy!

Incense and Peppermints is the first album by psychedelic rock band Strawberry Alarm Clock. Released in 1967, the album reached #11 on the Billboard 200 album charts and includes the band's #1 Billboard Hot 100 hit "Incense and Peppermints". In addition to the six members of the band, the album also features the flute playing of Steve Bartek, who co-wrote four songs on the album with bass player George Bunnell.

The tracks "The World's on Fire", "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow", and "Incense and Peppermints" are all featured in the motion picture Psych-Out, along with a new song; "Pretty Song from Psych-Out", which appeared on the band's second album Wake Up...It's Tomorrow.

Prior to the release of "Incense and Peppermints", the Strawberry Alarm Clock had already issued three singles ("My Flash on You" b/w "Fortune Teller", "In the Building" b/w "Hey Joe", and "Heart Full of Rain" b/w "Next Plane Home") under the name Thee Sixpence. During recording sessions for "Incense and Peppermints", the band expressed a dislike for the song's lyrics (written by John S. Carter), so the lead vocals were sung by a friend of the band, Greg Munford, who was attending the recording session as a visitor. The regular vocalists in the band were providing background and harmony vocals on the record. Band members Mark Weitz and Ed King were both denied songwriting credits by producer Frank Slay, despite the fact that the song was, at least partially, built on an instrumental idea of Weitz and King's. King would go on to greater fame as a member of the 1970s Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd.

"Incense and Peppermints" initially appeared on the B-side of Thee Sixpence's fourth single, "The Birdman of Alkatrash", released in April 1967. However, local radio stations began playing "Incense and Peppermints" instead of the A-side and the song began to gain in popularity in and around Los Angeles. Sensing the possibility of a national hit, Uni Records (a subsidiary of MCA) picked up the record for national distribution and the single was re-released in May 1967: this time with "Incense and Peppermints" on the A-side and "The Birdman of Alkatrash" as the B-side. By the time of this second pressing, the band had changed their name to "Strawberry Alarm Clock" due to the existence of a local group with a name somewhat similar to Thee Sixpence.

"Incense and Peppermints" spent 16 weeks on the Billboard chart, reaching the #1 spot on November 25, 1967. The single earned a gold disc from the RIAA on December 7, 1967 for sales of one million copies.

THIS IS THE QUINTESSENTIAL PSYCHEDELIC MASTERPIECE FROM 1967 THAT CAPTURES THE MUSIC, ART, FASHION AND SUBJECT MATTER OF THE "PSYCHEDELIC RENAISSANCE" AT IT'S PEAK. EVEN THOUGH I HAVE 2 COPIES OF THE ORIGINAL ALBUM (ONE STILL SEALED), I HAD TO PICK UP THIS IMPORT ON CD JUST FOR THE GREAT SONG "LOSE TO LIVE" WHICH HAS BEEN DELIBERATELY OMITTED FROM EVERY COMPILATION OF THE S.A.C. EVERY TUNE ON THIS ALBUM IS WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION! THE ORGAN TRACK TO "INCENSE & PEPPERMINTS" WAS PLAYED ON A FARFISA, NOT A VOX SUPER CONTINENTAL WHICH IS WHAT YOU USUALLY SEE MARK PLAYING ON OLD VIDEO CLIPS. EVEN THOUGH THE S.A.C WERE INFLUENCED BY THE BEACH BOYS, THE BEACH BOY DUDES COULD NOT MIRROR WHAT THE S.A.C WERE ABOUT! AS FOR THE IMPORT CD OF INCENSE & PEPPERMINTS, PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THERE ARE LYRICS INCLUDED IN THE INSERT AND THESE JAPANESE IMPORTS HAVE INCORRECT AND SOMETIMES ASININE INTERPRETATIONS OF WHAT THEY "HEAR" THE LYRICS ARE. THEY DO A SUPERB JOB IN THE SOUND REPRODUCTION AND PACKAGING, BUT THEY ARE FOOLISH AS TO NOT GO THE EXTRA MILE TO OBTAIN THE CORRECT LYRICS TO THESE SONGS FROM THE PUBLISHER. A DOMESTIC CD REISSUE, FAITHFUL TO THE ORIGINAL ALBUM, ON UNI/MCA WOULD BE IDEAL, BUT IT WILL PROBABLY NEVER BE ISSUED HERE. IMPORTS ARE IMPORTS FOR A REASON. WITHOUT A DOUBT ONE OF THE TOP 10 U.S PSYCH LP'S RELEASED BACK IN 67'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bare foot in the sixties.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 13, 2012
Attracted by the wonderful song 'Incense and Peppermints' by the equally delicious sounding Strawberry Alarm Clock, and remembering the music being used in Austin Powers (a little too young in the 60's to remember), I decided to check out the album of the same name. Great to chill out to while driving (will diffuse any road rage), perfect for a sixties party, or float around the room wearing nothing but patchouli oil and a smile(preferably when everyone else is out).
A talented band of the Hippy era who maybe didn't get as much attention at the time as they deserved - pull on that wig, sling on some love beads, stick two fingers up at the world and go back to the time of love and peace.
