Product Description

Talvin Singh - producer, DJ, arranger and tabla wizard - presents his 1st solo effort for Island. Talvin's compilation Anokha: Soundz of the Asian Underground reflects the diverse talents that appear at his London club; the release inspired much positive press, including a 3 1/2 star review in Rolling Stone. On OK, Singh fuses traditional Asian instrumentation with "bhangra beats," spearheading the techno/Asian fusion revolution dubbed "tabla-tronics." 1st single: "Traveller."

OK is one phrase that's universally known and understood, and on OK Talvin Singh tries for a similar global connection. A classically trained tabla player, he's performed with Björk and Massive Attack, holds his own club nights in London, and is the leading light of the burgeoning Asian Underground movement--in other words, a man of many parts. He brings them all together here--the Bollywood strings, the kannakol patterns of Indian music, and the skittering rhythms of drum & bass and jungle--to create something that is new and thoroughly vibrant. This is Britain at the millennium, drawing on its immigrants, full of Eastern promise, and ready to dive headlong into the future. An album of both intelligence and passion, it is more than OK; it's a complete marvel. --Chris Nickson

A masterpiece by the one and only Talvin SIngh

¿Quieres acercarte conmigo?

When I picked up 'Anokha' many years back, I rather enjoyed the East Indian flavour of the tunes, although some of the tracks were definitely hit-and-miss (a common problem with compilations). However, Talvin Singh's two dittys stuck out in my mind, and when I stumbled across this in Thailand last fall, I figured I'd give it a try. I'm more into Ninja Tune-oriented beats, and minimalist drum'n'bass is boring.
I was glad I got it--never having been a massive techno-buff, or even ambient music, this album blew my socks off by virtue of its sheer excellence throughout all 12 tracks. "Butterfly", "Soni", "Decca", and "Vikram the Vampire" are standouts, but don't let this fool you, the whole album is a keeper.
The perfect blend of international flavour and modern composition, proving you don't have to mess with funk or the blues to cop your dancefloor licks.

I have been meaning to check out Talvin Singh's music for some time now and I finally got the opportunity to when I found a copy of "O.K" in the used cd bins at my local record store today. I have always been fascinated with the idea of blending two completely different musical genres together, and especially the idea of world music (in this case, Indian music) with electronic beats (drum & bass). But if you really want to think about it, why wouldn't Indian and drum & bass music go good together? I was completely confounded by the gorgeous aural soundscapes of "O.K". The fusion of traditional Indian music with the modern sounds of drum & bass and ambient music is a relatively new to me so for me this is a complete departure from a lot of electronica music that I listen to. I loved listening to the traditional Indian instruments mixed together with the skitterish beats of drum & bass. The sonic impact of that combination had quite an impact on me. I was particularly enthralled with the closing track "Vikram the Vampire". The vocals at the end sent chills down my spine. The opening track "Traveller" is simply awesome. It immediately sends the listener on a spiritual journey as he or she listens to "O.K". After hearing "O.K", I think the future of electronica music should continue exploring its traditional roots in music while fusing them with modern electronic beats. "O.K" just proved to me that the combination works.

This is the album that sets Talvin Singh apart from other artists working in Asian groove lounge electronica. Singh's unique style and the openess of his music lends an etheral quality that is grounded by his choice of instrumentation and beat.

A pleasant enough album, but it veers to far toward ambiance for my taste, and too quickly falls into the background.

OK is more than just OK. I am a big fan of Indian culture and music as well as techno-electronic music. This album by Talvin Singh combines both of these elements into one bringing a unique blend of immaginative, bizzarre, and beautiful music. This is the perfect album to get a taste of original instrumentation that is spiritually inspiring. This album allows your mind and spirit to runaway into the depths of life and the dark corners of the world that are left to be revealed. OK is soothing to listen to and let yourself flow with the music. All the tracks are good and the track Traveller is the perfect introduction to this enigmatic piece of work. Butterfly is a beautiful track that allows you to enjoy the beauty of classic Indian sounds.
Sutrix and Disser/Point.Mento.B are other definite highlights that cling to you as you experience this musical journey.

WONDERFULLY EXECUTED SOUNDS. This has a unique edgy often tempo driven Asian sound that sounds like nothing else. I am a big fan and I also recommend grabbing this album for the reasons that Talvin uses experimental production fused with the most delicious ethnic music which works so well. I only have 2 of his albums so far and I can also highly recommend the album entitled 'Ha' by Talvin. If you are looking for other artists similar then look for Nitin Sawney also. Another great experimental producer who has created many wonderful albums.

I love Talvin Singh's recent work and have wanted this earlier album for a long time ... I love the sounds he creates ... not just for the knowledgeable and informed few ... his influence can be seen throughout the contemporary western music scene from Madonna and Bjork to Massive Attack and it's about time more people knew about the music he makes.
