Editorial Reviews
For a band that made a name for themselves as one of the preeminent live acts of the past 10 years, it was a bit shocking that they had never released any sort of live albums. So, following the amazing success of their chart-topping, double Grammy-nominated 2011 album THE KING IS DEAD, Portland, Oregon's favorite sons and daughters set to work creating the ultimate Decemberists live album. WE ALL RAISE OUR VOICES TO THE AIR (LIVE SONGS 04.11-08.11) was recorded at numerous shows during their sold out 2011 North American tour. The 20-song set compiles tracks from all phases of the bands illustrious career and appeals to both hardcore fans as well as those fans who just recently were exposed to the magic of The Decemberists including not only their radio hits, but also live show favorites and some special gems.

The song selection is pretty great with songs spanning their entire career. Though missing a couple of essentials, it could almost substitute as a greatest hits album. The ultimate standouts of the bunch for me are definitely "The Infanta" which is every bit as bombastic as it should be, and, of course, "The Mariner's Revenge Song" which always pleases. Considering the tour these songs were collected from, it should come to no surprise that many songs from 2011's The King is Dead are on this album and, I have to say, some of these songs sound even better live than the studio recordings. As a personal nitpick (though nothing major - especially for the majority of fans I know that don't like the album in the first place), I would have added at least "Hazards of Love 4 - The Drowned" to the set, but again, it's no big thing (it just happens to be one of my favorite songs)
I have no doubt that big fans of The Decemberists will purchase this regardless, but I'd recommend it for the fence-sitters out there too.
This review, which you'll see is 4-star, is really more for this particular album than about the songs. With few exceptions, each song on the album is outstanding, and worthy for any tour. I'm sorry they didn't perform/record "Sons and Daughters" on this tour, but otherwise, I'm pretty happy with the selections.
One of the fun things about the album is the interactions between lead singer Colin Meloy and the crowd (and some with bandmates). From random amusing comments to a somewhat irony laced sing-a-long to conclude "Billy Lair", you get a pretty good sense of the bond between the band and its fans. The are clearly not playing to 10,000 seat arena sell-outs...but rather to more intimate crowds bursting with enthusiasm. The album feels live throughout.
Some songs arguably improve upon the originals, or at least offer a different take that's equally valid. "The Rake's Song" has a powerful drumbeat and a bit more drama than the studio version. I feel "The Bagman's Gambit" takes on an extra edge of despair (and an extra chill). "The Crane Wife" saga is beautiful and haunting. "Leslie Anne Levine" gains a bit more power.
So why not 5-stars? Well, there are a few numbers that feel under or roughly produced. The show kicks off with a far from lively "The Infanta"...which ought to kick things into high gear. (The show we saw started the same, and I had the same feeling then. As though the sound mixer wasn't quite sure of his mix.) This tepid sound also affects the 2nd track, "The Calamity Song," one of my favorite up-tempo Decemberists tunes. I'll gladly stick with the original version. Finally by the time "Down By The Water" comes along, the song has more grit...it sounds like a ROCK song, not indie noodling on acoustic guitar.
I hear the Decemberists are taking a long hiatus. That's unfortunate, because I'm ready for some new music from them. But this solid live effort will tide me over for awhile. I think it's really more for fans than those new to the group...but if you ARE a fan, you should be pretty happy.
The sound is simply amazing, meaning for a planned live release, these folks did their homework and went the extra mile, which can sometimes be a big challenge in outdoor venues, as both Oregon shows were from this release.
If you are fan of this group, please buy multi copies and share the wealth and warmth from these recordings. If you aren't sure you are a fan and are dabbling in the band's music, then get this and will serve as a better than normal GH package.
After having to listen to the recent Fleetwood Mac live CD that also came out this week that redefines bad bootleg copy, it was so redeeming to listen to this and loud and know that all can and is good with the music world.
This ranks up with some of the great live recordings of the last few decades and this comes from someone who goes to 30 shows a year and buys anything live that could make sense. Thanks to the band and production unit for this appreciated effort.
