Editorial Reviews
2015 release from the Australian folk rock outfit. Singer/songwriters Donna Simpson, Vikki Thorn, and Josh Cunningham (along with bassist, Ben Franz and drummer, David Ross Macdonald) make up he Waifs. Their 2002 radio smash "London Still" was followed by a tour with Bob Dylan and ARIA Awards including Best Independent, and Best Blues And Roots Release. Each album they have recorded-from 1996's self-titled debut to 2011's acclaimed Temptation- has found The Waifs maturing as writers and performers. Beautiful You is their first new album in four years and features their trademark sound: a bit of Blues and Roots, a bit of Country, a bit of Jazz, anything really.

The Waifs are a First Class Band - there is no doubt & they have never put out any album which was less than good.
Beautiful You is more mainstream with a tilt at being commercial & it may yet prove to be their most successful record to date.
A lot of thought has gone into the preparation & the whole package is visually very appealing.
However most of the tracks are a slight departure from their traditional output & indeed the Waif's established earthy sound.
The song "Beautiful You" has the makings of a successful single & there is a good scattering of tracks which are both catchy &
enjoyable. What is apparent are the writing skills & delivery of Josh Cunningham which over the years have improved in leaps & bounds.
The tracks "Cracks of Dawn" & "Born to Love" are arguably the best on the album with Born to Love leaning towards the
traditional Waifs sound - Great.
Overall I feel the group is currently just cruising a bit - lets face it this is such a fine band - they could do most of this stuff
standing on their heads & one has the fond hope that they may yet produce another masterpiece.
Fans of the Waifs need no introduction to the merits of their earlier work. But for those who might be new or less familiar with the group- check out the superb live double album "A Brief history" - possibly the best live album ever & compiled during the Waifs
road hardened years up to 2003. I don't know many groups with such instant audience appeal.
Then there was the wonderful "Temptation" from 2011 - every track faultless.
It included two masterpieces by Josh Cunningham "Moses & The Lamb" & "Temptation" but it also closed with the glorious country flavoured "Goodbye Darlin" penned by Donna Simpson which is quite simply beautiful.
