Since the release of his debut, Maxinquaye, Tricky fans have wondered when he would or could match the nightmarish splendor of that trip-hop masterpiece. Blowback may not entirely appease the Tricky faithful, but it is the Bristol innovator's most satisfying album in a while. With Maxinquaye's surreal sonics lurking around its edges, Blowback is wonderfully schizophrenic, cavorting through robotically muted ragga, surging funk rock, nauseous, sample-mangled ballads, and bizarre versions of songs like the 1930s standard "Your Name" and Nirvana's "Something in the Way." In fact, with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alanis Morrisette, Cyndi Lauper, and Live's Ed Kowalcyzk along for the ride, Blowback is Tricky's Tommy, delivered through the mouths and muscles of the stars.

Blowback blows up with the arena-rock anthem "Evolution Revolution Love," featuring Kowalcyzk's familiar croon, while Tricky sings backup in a maniacal murmur. The ragga songs, which are dank and claustrophobic, are upended by the queasy flash metal of "Bury the Evidence." Finally, the trudging programming and Japanese vocals on "A Song for Yukiko" make an enigmatic gurgle that sums up Tricky's beautiful, bewildering creation. --Ken Micallef

This is probably hands down my favorite Tricky CD.
I know many people don't like it because of the guest vocalists but I think it really adds something cool to the mix.
I highly recommend this album.

This is not Tricky's best album, but it's far from something that is not interesting or high-quality. Making a playlist, I found quite a few gems on here, more than say Angels With Dirty Faces. Maybe more than a couple albums all told.

It's definitely Tricky embracing pop routes, not afraid to put it all out there and unafraid of the pun intended blowback. Screw 'em. Even the Nirvana cover isn't too bad. While I don't really think Ed from Live adds a ton here, you can definitely skip what you don't like. It's not some flowing, beauteous concept album.

Excess, Girls (with RHCP players), Your Name, You Don't Wanna, and Five Days are all outstanding tracks IMO. You might like some of the other stuff, you might not like a few of those, but all in all it's definitely worth having this album for the best ones. I consider them some of his best songs quite honestly.

All together no, I don't want Tricky to do this kind of album all the time, but it was a worthwhile deviation in his career that I thought caught ridiculous critical appraisal for it not being his debut or Nearly God.

Check it out and see what you want on here. It's definitely a solid album of quite varied tastes and musical styles.

on tricky's album blowback [2000], he pairs himself with the likings of anthony keidis and flea of the red hot chili peppers, ed kowalcyzk of live, alanis morissette and even cyndi lauper. that's one of the pleasures of being a beat mastermind, you can imagine absolutely anyone's vocal techniques to your music and make it happen. flowing on the waves of punk rock mixed within soulful background vocals and guitar chatterings, tricky grew from his pure trip hop roots to share a part that has never been seen before.

in the hot summer of 2000 seeing tricky perform with a full band feeling the songs of his album blowback vividly live in front of me put all his music on a completely different level. whether it was right or wrong, it felt hard to deny the intense attraction and mystery to each vampire melody. warm from the sun still on a high from seeing the show, there would be days of driving with friends upon lost roads in the woods of new hampshire laughing and staring at everything that went along to this soundtrack. drifting through the calmness of new england air, the surprise of sudden curves in emerald tree-lined roads... listening over and over again to the sensual duet between tricky and cyndi lauper, the way their different patterns came together almost made absolutely every detail fall into weird perfect sense. it still does.

dont stop//yr gonna break my heart

Tricky always hits you hard with the initial track on all his albums. Excess, is just as much of a power ballad as Overcome, Vent and For Real have been. It is actually Tricky's favorite track on the album. The pulsating drum beats from the start make your heart beat so fast you can't help but wanna dance or move to it. Its a great intro to his live shows. The next song, Evolution Revolution Love, is the anthem that most fans seem to love most. Its a song that most definately should get airplay cuz its the closest thing to pop Tricky has ever done even though some of it sounds like reggae mixed with Tricky's devil-like vocals. Great use of horn and acoustic guitar in this piece. The third track, Over Me, introduces a Jamaican reggae rapper named Hawkman and the seductive voice of Ambersunshower. On track four, Girls, Anthony Kiedis from The Red Hot Chili Peppers did vocals alongside Tricky as John Fruschante played lead guitar. I have no idea what this song is about. Please email me if you know the meaning to this song. Track five, You Don't Wanna, is a fun song to dance to. Its also a great intro to his live shows. This is Ambersunshower at her best. The beat to this song sounds very much like the beat to the Eurythmics' "sweet dreams are made of this." After this comes #1 Da Woman, sampled from the Wonder Woman TV show theme. I had no idea John Frasciante sang before but his vocals are stunning. I'm surprised he's not singing or doing lead vocals for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Listen to this song, the lyrics are funny and well written. Then there is 'Name', a slow song with a cool rhythm to it sung by Ambersunshower. After that is Diss Never(Dig up we history), when rapper Hawkman literally takes over the mic with his rhymes. Track nine, Bury The Evidence, is my favorite track on the album. I love the intensity in Tricky's voice as well as Hawkman's in this pompous opus. You have not experienced the power of Tricky until you hear him perform this song live. Its the most intense song you'll ever hear played in concert. Its what i consider to be the climax point of the disc. Sounds more like metal to me but its got pretty much everything in it. Next is 'Something In The Way', a decent cover off Nirvana's Nevermind album. Then comes Five Days , with Cyndi Lauper. Her voice is still great and she is making her comeback to the pop scene. Tricky absolutely adores her and loves her music. Give It To Em, is Tricky and Hawkman making chemistry again. Good use of sound effects in this. And finally A Song For Yukiko ends the album with a woman singing/echoing in Japanese and Tricky slowly rapping, saying something before the cd stops playing. That's the beauty of this, is that it is listenable all the way through. Rare for any artist, Tricky pulls it off.

But with that being said it's not a terrible CD from start to finish, The first track, Excess (which has been featured in a number of early 2000's horror films) is one of his strongest tracks, with the next 3 tracks being pretty strong standing on there own as well (Girls has a nice and heavy guitar mixed in which adds to the emotions of the song and gives it a punky edge) the next few tracks kind of falter. You Don't Wanna sounds like some terrible mid-late 2000's pop hit and Your Name has a cheesy funk feel. The album starts to slowly pick up again with Bury the Evidence, but the middle 3-4 tracks are what kills the vibe of the album for me, that and this album probly has some of Tricky's weakest lyrics. take out those 3,4 mid songs however and you would have a decently solid 5th release.
