Product Description

Wide Awake in America is a four-track EP by U2. Originally released May 1985.

Amazon.com

The defining moment of 1985's Live Aid music festival was U2's pulsing, magical performance of "Bad," where Bono climbed down into the audience and danced with a young woman while millions watched, for almost 20 minutes. The album version of the song wasn't anywhere near that amazing, so the centerpiece of the four-song Wide Awake EP, released in a hurry after Live Aid, is another gorgeously drawn-out live take on "Bad." It's augmented by two rather nice outtakes from the Unforgettable Fire sessions (which had previously appeared as British B-sides), both more showcases for the band's collaborative electricity than good songs per se, and another solid live recording. --Douglas Wolk

The four songs on this CD are beautiful and perfect. The two live songs carry more weight than the studio songs. But, that is not a knock on the studio songs. Live songs always have more passion from the people playing them. That is especially true of U2. Bono came in and took over the band from Larry Mullen, the drummer when they first came together. Larry had started a band and it was his band. When Bono came in as a lead singer, Larry could tell right away that Bono's passion and charisma would rule the day. He was right and the band carries on to this day as one of the greatest bands in history. Just think. Not one band member has left the band since their first recording. Phenomenal.

The Unforgettable Fire is one of my favorite albums, I especially love A Sort of Homecoming and Bad, which means this EP finds its way onto my playlist all the time. The live versions of these songs are worth the money. The live version of Bad is epic and shows why that song is such a powerhouse. The live version of A Sort of Homecoming is more down to earth and less atmospheric than the album version. The two B Sides are also a nice addition, I honestly don't know how they didn't make it onto the album unless they were cut for time. The Three Sunrises is one of U2's best B-sides. If you like the Unforgettable Fire, or 80's U2 for that matter, get this EP.

This is amazing. If you bought it, you probably already knew what the music was, but this review is as to the 180g re-release. In 2 words: just beautiful. Its a standard 180g re-release, but it is a fine replacement, in sound quality as well as heft, for my 33yo flimsy vinyl.

U2's "Wide Awake In America" is an oft-overlooked gem. The feel of this short album is a dreamy, early morning - as the title hints, an awakening. The first two songs are live cuts from concerts, but they are as clean as any regular album track, with very little of the stadium noise. The sound is so clear that you often forget that you're listening to a live track. The second two songs are studio tracks that compliment the first two.
two songs are my favorite:
"A Sort of Homecoming": Very mellow and dreamy to start out, Bono picks up the energy of the crowd a few lines into the song, and the drums kick in, and the song kicks into full swing. A fun jaunt through very visual lyrics. The refrain is simple, but Bono's crooning of it "I'll be there tonight."
"Love Comes Tumbling" is another studio track, and my favorite of this whole album. I always think of a subdued evening (or feel that it should be played then). The song has a quiet somber feel to it. Subtle but powerful, Edge's licks lead you through the song, and Bono softly murmurs and picks at the melancholy parts of your heart.
Overall, a nice little thing to listen to for a short car ride. :D

Had this on vinyl back in the day. Now I own it on CD. Only 4 songs, but still a great addition to any U2 fan's collection. Now if they will just come the Oklahoma City (or somewhere within 6 hrs of here), I WILL BE at the show. Saw them on the 360 tour and that was probably the best show I have ever seen by ANY band and I have been to several concerts.

These four songs marked a very important time for the band. After this tour they moved on to The Joshua Tree, and beyond. It’s great hearing them at this pivotal point in their career.
