about the phone was the opening and closing action and the overall quality'
I'm using it with a Speedtalk $5 /month SIMM and the set up and registration worked without a problem. Opening the phone cover is the most difficult part, but it works if you look at the small drawing in the instruction sheet. The thing I mainly needed was a Nokia phone replacement, and this phone is ideal for travel and emergency use. It fixes the things I didn't like about the Nokia phone and T-Mobile pay as you go plan. It has a much larger battery, better range with 3G 4G, and the keyboard and screen are protected when closed. Also the Speedtalk plan allows for running over the monthly limits and not being left stranded with a non working out of minutes phone. The keyboard and display are larger and
make the phone a pleasure to use.
Note: Speedtalk available at Amazon uses the T-Mobile network, but it is not owned by T-Mobile.
Update: It is s-l-o-w to power up if you keep it normally off like me (use for emergencies). If you just use it for making phone calls/answering phone calls and use no other features, it's a good phone.
Seller - Prime Cellutions (its not my typo, its their spelling).
Item: " Alcatel QUICKFLIP 4044C | 4G LTE | HD Voice FlipPhone | Cricket Unlocked for T-Mobile & AT&T, Grey, 4GB"
Description mention says that "battery … can last 8 solid hours of streaming at 4G LTE speeds as well a Standby time of up to 16 days (according to the manufacturer)". I assume that is one more confirmation that its 4G phone.
I received it with KaiOS 1.0
Pro's:
Recognized by Mint and connected to it.
Con's:
- Its sold as new, but it is not NEW - id doesn't have original Alcatel box.
- Battery life on standby is less than 24 hours - probably because it's not new.
- Microphone doesn't work in normal mode. The workaround - put the phone into "speaker" mode. Its kind of OK at home, but bad option elsewhere.
- Received email from Mint: "Your Cricket Quick Flip has been identified as a 3G compatible device, but it is not compatible with 5G or 4G LTE bandwidths". New phones on Alcatel web site come with KaiOS 3.0 - I read somewhere its minimum requirements for 4G - I don't know for sure.
Will try to get same phone one more time and will return 1st one.
UPDATE - IMPORTANT!!!
While I've been very happy with this phone since I bought it, using it on WalMart's Family Mobile prepaid service, I've now run into problems. I used Family Mobile because it uses the T-Mobile network, I needed that for several reasons I won't go into here. As of January 2021, T-Mobile is requiring that any phone used on their network be not only 4G LTE compatible but VoLTE compatible too. This phone is not. I only found out by trying to top up my phone and not being able. WalMart didn't notify me and won't refund what I spent on the top-up. So, as of Jan 2021, you need to look for a different phone just like I'm doing.
In summary, this is an unlocked GSM phone that will only work with a SIM card from a GSM carrier. To all those that complain and scream bloody murder and fraud, I can only say you must not know what you're doing.
The phone works perfectly for my requirements. I had been concerned based on other reviews it would NOT be unlocked, but it definitely is (I've tested it on T-Mobile and AT&T networks, with both US and UK SIM cards.
To my surprise it came new, sealed in an original Cricket box, with all documentation/cricket documents and badging included (and the Cricket 'app' installed). However, it was unlocked out of the box.
Battery life seems to be reasonable (I've not used it much, but left alone it seems to last at least 5 or 6 days in standby).
The only negatives:
It doesn't feel anywhere as robust as the old skool Nokia or Motorola flip phones - I'm sure that if dropped onto a solid concrete surface it would be damaged, rather than just scratched.
This is made worse by the fact that it doesn't seem to sit in the hand as well - it's fairly square, with rounded edges, and the plastic is slippery, even though the back has a molded texture. I've already dropped it a few times, though it's not been damaged hitting a hardwood floor.
One thing that is annoying - the outside display (the one you can see when the phone is closed) is a color LCD display - and to save power it is off until you open the phone or touch a button. I'd prefer it if they'd included a low power greyscale LCD or even 'ink' display so that it was always on, so you could check the time, signal strength and outstanding messages without turning the display on or opening the phone.
My usage is going to be low, but if have any problems I'll be sure to update this review, but so far it earns 4-stars.
