About the author
Peta writes and illustrates her funny picture books on the Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England, where she lives with her husband, daughter, and hairy jack russell, Archie. Her colourful books combine fun and silliness with important issues like childhood anxiety and resilience and environmental concerns including light and plastic pollution.
Peta loves going into schools to share her books and inspire children in their writing and art. She has appeared at a number of festivals and other events, including: Barnes Children’s Literature Festival, Isle of Wight Literary Festival, Exmoor Dark Skies Festival and Ventnor Fringe. She is one of the organisers of the IW Story Festival, for children and families, which takes place every February half term.

From that day on, even though Joe tried to be brave, he would start having doubts as Niggle told him to be scared. One day, he needed to be brave, but the Niggle was telling him he couldn’t. That’s when the voice of Resolve appeared and helped Joe conquer the Niggle and his fear.
‘The Niggle’ is written in rhyme with short paragraphs that are surrounded by full page illustrations, which really emphasise the story and bring it to life. There are also parts of the illustrations that are left uncoloured, so the reader can colour them in.
I like how Ms. Rainford has written what the Niggle tells Joe in in his ear in swirly writing. This lets children know that this is his Niggle speaking.
From the beginning we meet Joe at two, when he doesn’t have a care in the world, nor any fear. He doesn’t understand how dangerous some of the things he does could be. Then as he gets older, and through an accident that scares him, we get to see Joe as a child that although wants to do some of the dangerous things, has this little voice in his head telling him not too.
This little voice isn’t really a bad thing as long as it doesn’t take over, which in Joe’s case it does. This is until he is needed to be very brave, when he realises that he is braver than he thought. It was nice to see Joe back with some confidence again.
This is a very helpful book, particularly for children who are needing help combating their own fears. I especially love how the author, through the voice of Resolve, talks to the reader about being strong.

*I received a free copy of this book, which I voluntarily reviewed
This book is a wonderful nod to so many classic fairy tales. It has all of the components needed:
A hero with a problem
A super rotten villain
A damsel in distress
A timeless moral
AND IT RHYMES!
Little Joe Jackson is a fearless, good natured little boy, until the dreaded Niggle puts doubt in his mind. This story reminds us all, that experiencing life can be a little scary, but fear should never stop you from trying new things!
I found the rhymes to be smooth and well written. The author utilizes some unique and uncommon words, which I very much appreciated. They made the story feel all the more original and was just another reason to keep reading.
This book is ideal for a bedtime story or for a reading in a children's library. It's encouraging message is one that will never go out of style and will never stop being necessary. And while the main character is a spunky little boy, The Niggle will absolutely capture the hearts and minds of spunky little girls.
I gave this book a well deserved 5☆ rating. Between the perfectly crafted story and the fun illustrations, I just know you will do the same.
It is a fun book to read but the meaning behind the story is great - the images are really good and they illustrate the story really well.
The whole concept is great and it has been well thought through - 5 stars from me and it is definitely a book I would recommend!
