Another great Gorka album. I never care if the same song is on an album, because they are often not the same recording. But this has nothing that I have on other recordings.

John Gorka is a wonderful singer-songwriter, one of the best of the "new folk". Wonder why singer-songwriters who haven't become big hits are always classified as folk or country. They need their own genre. Richard Shindell, Cheryl Wheeler, Bonnie Raitt (she is big but still classified oddly), etc.

This is a brilliant singer/songwriter. It's amazing that the general public hasn't discovered him. Honesty and love exude from this man. He is also wonderful in concert...saw him in Oshkosh, Wisconsin at the Grand Theatre in 2001.

Ah, what to do if you are a folkie who might not even have been born forty years ago or so when folk music hit its peak. Well, I think you'd better have a new twist, some great arrangements, or be one heckuva writer. Otherwise, you risk the same old-same old syndrome. And, for me, that's precisely where John Gorka lands. There's nothing striking about his music and his lyrics are tired, even if he means them as irony ("I went off like a gun in a loaded room" "Like the old saying goes, all roads lead to Rome" "I sowed my seed like a farm boy"). I bought the CD on the promise of Good Noise. None of the rest comes close to matching up.

Choose any Gorka recording and be ready to be touched. He hits home without disturbing and makes one think and still feel good. Flying Red Horses is my favorite cut off this CD. I just love it!

Aber das ist doch...?! Nein, ist er nicht! Der, mit der wirklich mustermäßigen unglaublichen Vokuhila-Frisur soll tatsächlich sein...?! Ja, genau, der ist's. Der mit dem Traumschnitt der 80er Jahre, das ist tatsächlich John Gorka - Lieblings-Mann (nicht -Kind) des Allamerican Folks, und was er nicht ist...ist Jeffrey Foucault - auch wenn er so klingt!

Also mal sachlich: klingen tut er, John Gorka, hier auf dieser Aufnahme von 1994 tatsächlich wie der Stimmklon Foucaults, halt 12 Jahre vor dessen Ghost Repeater Aufnahme, deren Machart sie sehr ähnelt. Auf Ghost Repeater ließ Foucault den Blues ein wenig in den Hintergrund treten, spitzte die Kompositionen ein wenig pop-mäßig an - und klang auf einmal tauglich für ein größeres Publikum. So auch Gorka hier.

Im Americana-Land wird Gorka als der Folker gefeiert. Auf Red House erschienen eine handvoll Aufnahmen - eine schöner als die vorhergehende. Ein einziger Kritiker wagte zu einer Neueren einen Verriss, als er schrieb, jetzt wär's aber gut mit dem lahmen Rumgesülze. Nur der reine Schönklang, nur noch tiefergelegtes Stimm-Testosteron wäre auf Dauer schrecklich langweilig...Recht hat er. Dementsprechend empfahl er, sich doch mal aufmerksam Altaufnahmen von Gorka anzuhören, so in etwa Out Of The Valley.
Und hier nun, 1994, ist tasächlich ein wundervoller Mix aus allem Möglichen entstanden: wie gesagt, da er sich im Gegensatz zu neueren Aufnahmen hier zu unterschiedlichen Tempi motivieren lässt, muss er auch seine Stimme beschleunigen. Das führt dann zwar in Foucault'sche Regionen - definitiv nicht höher - belässt damit in ausreichendem Maße den What-A-Man-Faktor in der Musik, macht den musikalischen "Rest" aber wirklich bunt, vielfältig und, vor allem, interessant. Das Spektrum reicht vom Folkblues, über leicht Country infizierte Songs, Honkytonk-Momenten, etwas von dem ich noch nicht weiß, wie ich es bezeichnen soll...Swing ist's nicht, über leichte R'n'B-Einflüsse, so in etwa im Mark Cohn Soft-Stil, dezentem Soul- und Gospel-Anteil, siehe Bonnie Raitt, bis hin zu Pop. Klassemix - und auch noch in Nashville zusammengerührt! Mann glaubt's kaum, dass die im UCC US-Conservative-Capitol dermaßen experimentierfreudig waren....halt mit altbekannten Zutaten.

Und klingt das alles so, als wäre das schwer zusammengeschustert....weit gefehlt! Denn dass das weit gefehlt ist, dafür sorgt der Americana-Produktions-Zauberer der 90 Jahre. Was hat der in diesem Jahrzehnt nicht alles hervorgehext, was an Stilgebräu zusammengerührt, das doch immer unverwechselbar hinsichtlich der Interpreten-Charakteristika war.
Ich hatte das sagenhafte Glück ihn einmal live zu sehen - und auch noch in einer sagenhaft einmaligen Konstellation: die Walking in Memphis Konzertreihe von Mark Cohn. Da standen tatsächlich nur zwei Mann auf der Bühne, Cohn mit Stimme und er mit Gitarren jeder Art. Und "er", das war John Leventhal - und der klang mit dem, was er auf, mit und aus seinen Gitarren zauberte wie eine ganze Band, wie ein Orchester...ohne jemals Cohn an die Wand zu spielen. Nein, er stellte ihn heraus, ließ ihn Star am Bühnenrand sein. Und das war kein einmaliger Fall...
So produzierte und bespielte er in diesen Jahren ebenso die besten Aufnahmen Mary Chapin Carpenter's, Loudon Wainwright's, Jackson Browne's, Rodney Crowell's, Mark Cohn's, Rosanne Cash's, Susan Tedeschi's, Elvis Costello's, Emmylou Harris'....zog die absoluten Topmusiker zu Bands zusammen von denen man glauben würde, dass die sich niemals in einer Band treffen könnten. Hier sind es tatsächlich Leo Kottke und Jerry Douglas und Tim O'Brien an den Gitarren (plus Jennings selbst), Matt Rollings, Keyboards, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Vocals, undundund. Und wer glaubt, dass das bestenfalls zu einem Gitarrenbrei oder reiner Auftragsarbeit führt - der täuscht sich. Jeder von denen klingt charakteristisch individuell. Alles auf kompetenteste Art und Weise zusammengewebt von eben Jennings, der sich auch hier voll in den Dienst John Gorka's stellt.

Also hat der eine amerikanischer Kritiker Recht?! Ich fürchte - ja!
