Not to pick on the previous reviewer particularly (whom I forgive for his negative remarks because he obviously has not yet lived long enough to make sense of "Who woulda thunk it?"), but now I've seen at least two reviews that pan this album in light of Greg's later work. In that case, the later work must be astounding! But this album, along with One Night, showcase what I consider to be the best of Greg Brown.

When this album first came out, I was living through the aftermath of my first wife's near-fatal auto accident. She was in ICU in a coma (from which she would not meaningfully recover, though her body is still alive today), and I would have given ANYTHING to be "in the dark with her". Holding hands in the dark was a definite part of our relationship, and with this simple little song, Greg touched my heart the way no singer anywhere else ever has. In fact, I can get a little teary just thinking about it. The energy is still there...And then there are the other 11 songs!

Others have described his lyricism better than I ever could, but if the purpose of music is to move you emotionally, this album (and certain tracks on One Night) will do that, and profoundly. You will laugh, and you WILL cry. His insight into the human condition (what a trite phrase!), or what it's like to live through life's triumphs and tragedies, plus the tedium of every blighted day in between, is (even in this so-called "early" work) without peer among singers. Not country, not folk, exactly, but personal. Very personal. Nobody else even comes close.

You will NOT be wasting your time or money on this album. I might mention that I've now bought it three times: once on LP, once on CD, and now on MP3 (the CD disappeared in a move). Definitely worth it.

So, I am going to say that this album, along with ...Goodnight Kiss, are the essence of excellence. I suppose it's a little game of mine but over the years I have enjoyed putting this on in 'the backround' while at work, on road trips, etc. and watching people slowly grasp that they need to pull away some of their attention to whatever else because apparently 'There is something very, very good going on'. These two albums esp. are resonant for those with midwestern ties or even of a certain age or entering a certain age I suppose, but for others -they offer such insight!! The folks described above ALWAYS, unavoidably, describe him/his music as {[GENUINE]}. If that's not appealing to you then I'm not offering much of an endorsement perhaps. Tender, wistful, wry, sharp, honest, acute.
With regard to the comparison to later albums I'll just say that these were before the inevitable anger set in, for better or worse. (By the way, I've talked to Greg a couple of times [briefly] and the guy's pretty seamless. Of course!)

I first heard & saw Greg Brown @ 35 yrs ago singing in a converted barn called ' The Palms ' which was on the other side of the freeway from Davis, Calif. It's said that quality can't be defined but it surely can be experienced. That's what I felt in that old barn which sat maybe 50 people. Just Greg, his voice & guitar. He'd written & performed, Who Woulda Thunk It - " Can't eat a horse, NO, caus we don't want to". It's rarely your typical fair type music but just got into my bones. Another fun one of his is, ' Bathtub Blues ' It was written for kids but ' Grown Ups ' will enjoy it as well.

Although "old hat" by now (wait, does anyone under the age of 45 even say that expression any longer? It's doubtful!), Greg Brown never fails to entertain, provoke, make you chuckle and/or tear up. In short, a brilliant and important songwriter who even knows how to perform! This is, as "they" say, an oldie but goodie and well worth buying on CD vs. "just" downloading from iTunes or amazon.com. If you like intelligent singer-songwriting then you can't go wrong!

This is absolutely one of my all time favorite albums - has been for nearly 20 years! It's as close to perfect as can be! My musical taste ranges from Deep Purple to Simon and Garfunkel, from Bach to Dylan, Charlie Parker to Andre 3000. Greg Brown is right up there with the best! His songs are fun, meaningful, playful, serious, unique, and original. I laugh and cry at the same time while listening to this album!

Thanks Greg!

I love Greg Brown and have many of his CDs. This one left me wanting. I put on his CD slant six mind just to be sure it wasn't me. It wasn't.

Don't know why it took me so long to buy this album as it's probably his best work. Just an amazing collection of memorable songs with outstanding lyrics. He really is America's most under-rated song writer. Highly recommended.
