Editorial Reviews

While some continue to champion the Replacements' Don't Tell a Soul and All Shook Down exit albums, Pleased to Meet Me truly represents the last vital effort of a great band beginning its descent. The first album released after founding lead guitarist Bob Stinson's official departure, Pleased nevertheless retains plenty of the Mats' innate punky drive, albeit here more focused and tempered. Group avatar Paul Westerberg feuded with Memphis producer Jim Dickinson (brought in because of his production of Big Star's melancholy classic Third/Sister Lovers) over what he considered Dickinson's civilizing touches. In retrospect, however, the brass-and-string flourishes on the catchy coda "Can't Hardly Wait" and the more disciplined drumming of Chris Mars make Pleased a more comfortable reconciliation of the group's raw roots and musical maturity. --Steven Stolder

Great album with a couple of their bigger radio hits. A good addition to the collection.

The Replacements made their first great album in 1984 with "Let It Be", which showed the band developing a more sincere sound on a couple of tracks. The album recieved a lot of critical acclaim and was able to get them signed to a major lable at Sire records. They released the album "Tim" in 1985 which I consider to be their best and most complete album. It established a unique style in alternative rock that would later inspire bands like The Goo Goo Dolls. On the band's next album with Sire records, titled "Pleased To Meet Me" which was released in 1987, the band would attempt to go further in their style, aiming towards a more polished and produced sound but they still are raw and in your face. The band also experimented a little bit on tracks such as "I Don't Know" and "Nightclub Jitters" which are very good songs that have a lot of jazz influence in them. Also on songs such as "The Ledge", they went for a darker style with lyrics that caused the song to be banned from MTV and radio. Although I don't see anything in the lyrics as offensive, I guess at the time a song about suicide was not accepted. This was before the grunge movement with Nirvana and Pearl Jam, we were still in the 80s when Madonna and Duran Duran were wrting upbeat pop tunes.

The album is mostly a fun one, with anthems such as "Alex Chilton", a song written about Paul's musical idol. It is a superbly performed song that will have you dancing for sure. Others are "Valentine", an amzing song that defines the alternative era. "I.O.U." is the opening song on the album and is a mixture of The Rolling Stones meets punk rock. I really enjoy "Never Mind", an underrated song I think. "Skyway" is a pretty and delicate song. Of course the best thing about this album is the final track, "Can't Hardly Wait". Maybe the best melody that the Paul ever wrote with the band and their most epic.

The biggest problem that I have with this album is that it's too short again. It's only 33 mintues long. All of The Replacements albums suffer from this and I wish that some other tracks could have been added. They wrote a lot of material for this album so I don't know why most of it didn't end up on the set list. If you buy the special edition version of this album, you can hear some of the material recorded. I think that a couple of other songs should have been added, like their cover of "Route 66". "Birthday Gal" is another song that I love and wish that it was included because it only excists in demo form but there is so much potential in the song. I think that all of these cuts hurt the album but the songs that made the cut are so amazing that you can forgive them for that.

I always recommend The Replacements to fans of pop rock or alternative rock. The songs are so moving and incredible. They are still a favorite band of mine. Let's hope that eventually they make it into the rock 'n' roll hall of fame.

When I first heard "Please To Meet Me" I was underwhelmed mainly, I think, because of my own expectations at the time of what The 'Mats were supposed to be... having revisited the record through the remastered cd, I can state how dead wrong I was! The songs entertaining and or masterfully written, the performances and arrangements are daring and stellar, and the production is impeccable. PTMM is a stone classic! I just wasn't mature enough to realize that when it was first released.

I would advise peopple that this would be better described as the first Paul Westerberger solo album, even though it's labeled as The Replacements.
This album marks a departure from the "punk-rock" sound of the first Replacements formation.
This is the first record without the original Guitarrist.
And it has nothing of the original raw , self-indulgent, sound that was so characterisitc of early Replacements.
But still, this record is one of the best records ever made. Great songs, great performance, a little "too polished" some times, but still has a lot of energy into it.

This cd should be required listening for anyone interested in knowing how to craft music that is both engaging and deep. I have listened to this cd thousands of times since it came out and it never fails to make me happy. With a combination of thoughtful lyrics and impossibly catchy melodies that is completely irresistible, this cd is perfection!

It's not Let it Be. Closer to Tim, but certainly a definitive Replacements album in style and arrangement. Excellently produced sound, vocals, sweet solos and well harnessed power. Reminiscent of the best thing that came out of the eighties. This band! I liked it the first time I listened. Loved it by the tenth time. Hard to replace with another artist in your CD player once you're hooked.

This has been out of print nice to see Rhino pop a few more 180gr copies of this beast of album. Great addition to the library as my original was a cassette lost in a fire years ago.
