It just doesn't get any better than this IMO. Creative, talented musicians doing things that no one else seems to be able to do or don't want to do or something. But it comes off as a refreshing sound that combines so many elements it would be impossible to limit it to one of the types of music we all know. It isn't just country or rock or blues or jazz. It isn't just hillbilly music. It's just music really and it is very good music played extremely well. These guys are the Grateful Dead of the Appalachian hills. And the lyrics really have something to say that isn't often said. Some of their attitudes may be tied to movements of the past but some are tied to the eternal condition of man. They have the wisdom of the ancient hills in their songs but most of all they are having fun and they drag you along for the ride. They are genuine people who aren't pretending to be something they aren't. They are as real as the mountains that nurtured their world view. Charlie Gearheart is the inspiration for the band's ways it seems and he is exactly what you see. You won't see him putting on a different face for the stage. He lives what he sings. "It's just a way of life so easy to find. It won't be on maps they make and you can't buy it on time (credit)." The world he sings about is really out there. But it gets overlooked by the rest of the world and that's just fine too. Gearheart once said we should build a fence around the Hillbilly Nation and not let anyone out our anyone in. If you have lived where he talks about you'll know just why he said that. People there don't need to escape to the city and they don't want people bringing the city to them. It's already perfect the way it is or as close to it as it gets anyway.

They are indeed the "Flock that Rocks". This album is so refreshingly different than anything else you will hear that it is a must have for anyone tired of the same ol same ol. I guess growing up and living just 20 minutes from the Charlie Gearheart Highway (the front man) I may be a little biased, but I think it has universal appeal. I saw the band at a homecoming of sorts at the MAC Arts Center and the show they put on was pure energy. It was like a Dead Head seeing Jerry and the boys playing in SF. That concert has been released on cd as well, and it is on their website. Its all good, get some and enjoy.

Like it says in the liner notes, Capitol Records did not know how to market Goose Creek, way back in 1970. In hindsight that was probably a good thing. Here is a 2007 recording that still exudes the same unadulterated qualities of their initial 1970 recording.
