Gold Afternoon Fix Limited Black & Gold VINYL Review
Not going to review the album's music. If you're a Church fan you already know it's a solid album. I want to comment on how nice Music on Vinyl's "Limited Black & Gold" release is. Well worth adding to your vinyl collection. I bought a couple album re-releases from other artists by Music on Vinyl and they all have been TOP NOTCH. They include a clear sealable outer sleeve. The cover artwork has all been crisp and vivid and some albums included lyric booklets. The vinyl has all been 180g and has run flat. Their site shows current and future releases. Worth checking them out and seeing if any of your wishlist albums are available from them. This Church album is no exception. Looks, plays & sounds great. Get a copy while they are affordable and available. Added some pics. Hope this helps...

After Starfish there was a lot of expectations for The Church's next release. It came in 1990 with the release of Gold Afternoon Fix.It pays attention to detail so it doesn't have that experimental freeflow at times but it was time to lay down their sound, and it is very hard to top a big hit after "Under The Milky Way".... but the album does actually have a single that did very well......Metropolis.But The Church play it safe and actually come up with a poppy, rock oriented album, with all the signatures of the band etched on it...Martys noodlings,Peters axisms, the throbbing bass lines, and the enigmatic, sensual, cool sound of Steve Kilbey's vocal utterances, and word play. They were here to stay, and their passion for great sound really comes together here but it did not top Starfish in many peoples view.Marty sings his one song,Russian Autumn Heart which is stunning and causes heads to turn for Martys gifts of vocalizing and songwriting and guitar vision and he now enjoys a very nice solo career. All of the Church men play in other projects when they are not touring.Unfortunately this would be the last album with Richard Ploog on drums who has been with them from the beginning. The last song on the disc is probably one of the top ten rock songs of all time for intensity and performance.Again we see the plea for life as it is meant to be lived within the mystical realm of the inner man..........in the mean time we have to "grind it out"All together another lovely album from The Church. It belongs in the collection. But as you know by now,I am a little biased. They are the best band of the last three decades but as we go through each pearl,I will have criticism and stuff that I feel was not their best, but this certainly isn't one of those albums.Lest I forget to mention Peter Koppes also enjoys the tradition of singing a song on most every Church album. He delivers with a throbbing rocker....."Transient".

This is one of my favorite CDs by The Church. While not as well-known as Starfish, it has many excellent songs on it, some of which contain considerable beauty as well as catchy energy, as is characteristic for this fine band. I measure how good a CD is by how I feel when I am listening to it. When I listen to the songs on this CD, it always puts me in a good mood. I won't belabor my favorite songs. Each listener will form his own opinion about that, but please do check out this CD. It can be addictive.

This album was panned at its release as a mediocre cash cow follow-on to Starfish. I passed it up the first time around in the record stores because the glam rock cover supported that assumption. This was my last Church album to buy--I have all the rest--and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The music is much less dated than the cover. GAF is a more lively album than Starfish and steps comfortably outside of the confined sound of that album, more like Heyday (get that one!). Some of their best guitar work is here, on songs like Essence and Grind. The latter song is definitely in The Church's top ten--powerful, dense, and moody. Pharaoh, Metropolis, Disappointment, and Fading Away are all good listens as well. The foundations of the brilliant Priest=Aura (get that one too!) are plain here. One star deducted for the pop-rock formula songs that sacrifice The Church's signature style, such as Russian Autumn Heart and You're Still Beautiful. The bonus disc is fine but nothing special, and marred by narrow dynamic range, excessive reverb on vocals, and a more obvious drum machine.

This album is not as well loved as many of their other albums, but there are many great songs on here like Pharaoh, Disappointment, Grind, Russian Autumn Heart and others. The CD version has two 'extra' tracks not available on the vinyl album.

excellent 2 disc cd sounds like the era where church branched into acid/art rock as in later albums "forget yourself" etc.everytime i get a church cd i am impressed and wonder why i quit listening to them 20 years ago.

I first became aware of The Church in 1988 with the release of Starfish and it was the opener, Destination, that caught my attention. That track alone was different from most of the other late 80s alternative pop that I was immediately interested in hearing more. I had become a fan of Midnight Oil the year earlier with Diesel And Dust and realized that there was real talent brewing from Australia, even though Starfish and GAF were recorded in L.A. This album has simply grown on me more with each passing year and seems ever more relevant as time goes on. Song order on any album is important and I think they nailed that with this one. The song Laughing haunts me now as it did when I first heard it. Kilbey dug deep on that one, it is very personal. And why Grind was not in heavy rotation on AOR radio back then is beyond me. I get the feeling the record execs wanted to control them; they even disallowed John Paul Jones to produce it as the band wanted, opting for Watchel again in order to keep the profit machine turning. But there is much to be mined from listening to this one again and again. One of the best 1990s releases. It has well stood the test of time.
