David Gray's long, twisty path to success finally reached its conclusion with White Ladder, one of 1999's biggest worldwide hits. It was a popular rebirth of the proverbial folk music troubadour--albeit with a twist of electronica for added spice. That breakthrough has made it possible for Lost Songs, a collection of tracks Gray recorded in the three-year period between Ladder and 1996's Sell, Sell, Sell, to see the light of day. This was a desperate period in Gray's career, having been dropped from a major label for a second time (the first after the excellent but largely unnoticed 1994 release, Flesh), and the songs here reflect a resilient yet fading sense of hope. Most of them are short, stripped-down to their bare acoustic necessities and brimming with familiar themes of resignation, or a love just out of reach. "I'm getting tired of being denied, of things getting in my way, and if I'm quiet, that's 'cause there's nothing left to say," Gray sings on "Red Moon," his raspy-voiced cadence crying out over rough, indelicate guitar chords. Part of what makes Gray's musical voice so interesting is the way these words come out, vowels and consonants all chewed up and spit out, direct and deliberate, yet expressed with a cavalier matter-of-factness. It makes his work seem personal and individual, even when the sentiments he expresses are unabashedly accessible and universal. Of course, making the personal seem universal is the same approach folk singers from Van Morrison on down have used since time began. When it's done this well, however, that's just fine. --Matthew Cooke

For anyone who enjoys David Gray OR British acoustic guitar songs from the 90's, you are gonna like this. It's a great chill mix of D.G. tunes unheard by many, so this album comes as a surprise and treat to most people. I enjoy this album because it's very relaxing (great driving music) and the quality is exceptional (no garage recordings here). Lastly, the songs are very basic for the most part, just David and his guitar with the occassional backing instrumentation (piano, strings). Don't expect pop anthems like on some of his albums; this is toned down and definitive early-days D.G., and therefore not to be missed!

Living in Sri Lanka, most of my audio CD's are from Amazon US, UK and JP
I have previous 3 albums from David Gray, namely White Ladder, Draw the Line and A New day at midnight,
This I would say is my favorite out of the whole lot for the simple reason that these sound very spontaneous with that characteristic 'thoughtfulness' of David's calm but firm voice.

Only disappointments are, far too less songs and very difficult to source this album to my home country.
I ordered the second CD from Amazon JP for my friend's birthday in June, hopefully should arrive on time.

I just got this album and want to say if you listen to David Gray for his voice, don't miss this album. Very basic, very thoughtful. I listen to Flame Turns Blue on repeat for a while before I move on to the rest of the album. I think it is one of his best songs.

Anything by David Gray is good, very good and Lost Songs is no exception.

If you appreciate David gray's unique voice, this is a must for your collection. I had my entire CD collection stolen (I cried many tears) and this is one of my first "must have" replacements!

If you are a David Gray fan you cannot pass up this cd. Go buy it and listen to it over and over just like I did.

Nice, but too low key.

He almost never plays these songs in concert, so it's great to have on CD.

Just listening to this now as I write the review. Some really great David Gray songs on here from a few years back. Not a bad one among them and really hard to pick out a favourite. But really like Flame Turns Blue. The great thing about David Gray is that he continues to develop - twenty or so years on he continues to create great sounds. A real talent from the early days until today. Can't wait for his next album.

ist ja in letzter Zeit etwas in den Pop abgewandert. Hier hört man noch seinen Ursprung, seine kleinen, kreativen Ideen heraus, die ihn dorthin gebracht haben, wo er heute ist, sehr emotional.

This is a wonderful CD, so difficult to get down to Sri Lanka as most are sold through Amazon by other sellers.
However managed to get two down, one for me one for my friend.
