Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Stripped down and shot through with sadness, Gillian's 1998 album further asserted her as one of the most compelling new artists in Americana. The 11 Welch/Rawlings songs include Caleb Meyer; My Morphine; Honey Now; Whiskey Girl; One Morning, and more!

Review

Like many an Appalachian song, and the English and Scottish ballads that inspired them, Welch's grisly new tales have a dreamlike quality, a paradoxical lightness that transforms their horrific subject matter into bewitching surreality. -- No Depression

On her second album, Gillian Welch revives the Appalachian death-ballad tradition with a vengeance. --
USA Today

Sun creeps into these rain sessions just once, with the under-two-minute rockabilly rave "Honey Now;" the rest is an extreme venture further into a new- traditionalist funk, with just her and boyfriend/collaborator David Rawlings pickin' and decidedly not grinnin'. --
Entertainment Weekly

The arid yet emotional delivery breathes life into the hard-life scenarios and sorrow-racked characters. --
The Los Angeles Times

I heard of Gillian Welch through the "O Brother" movie and soundtrack (one of the "sirens"), and began to listen to cuts off some of her CDs. At first, I didn't listen to this one because her other CDs had higher ratings overall in the reviews. But, when I decided to listen, I was immediately hooked. I bought the CD and haven't been disappointed in the least. As a matter of fact, this one grows on me the more I hear it. Gillian has a "lazy" style on this that is perfect for those moody-weather days (or any others for that fact). She combines "old-time", "new grass" and "blues-flavor" in a modern, acoustic (except for one song) fashion that is addictive. I hope she does more work like this CD!

I must confess to having just discovered Gillian Welch. She came to me highly recoemmeded, and after listening to song previews on the website, I was immediately smitten and bought two albums. Good move! The tunes are buoyant and get me through the day, and the lyrics are soulful--I catch myself humming the songs over and over. How did I make it this far without you, Gillian? Thank God you have arrived in my life at last!

I have long been impressed by Gillian Welch and her music. She composes well and she is an excellent performer. This music has a darker tone and some of the themes could be considered disturbing. Even so, the songs are done well and Ms Welch is ably accompanied on this CD by David Rawlings on guitar.

I'm revising this after realizing that I initially wrote a review for "The Harrow and the Harvest" and posted it under this album by accident. Anyway, this is a great album too, but if you're looking to get into some Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, I'd recommend "The Harrow and the Harvest" over this one. "Hell Among the Yearlings" has some beautiful, haunting, minor-key tunes that I love. However, some of the slower melodies don't quite do it for me as they are more morose than they are lovely.

There are common themes throughout many of her albums. Some of the sentiments on Tear My Stillhouse Down show themselves in this work. The guitar playing on this album is superb and very tasteful. Her vocals are strong and unique. A plain and simple album that is very much worth listening to over and over again.

When G.W. is on track she can't be beat. Unfortunatedly she's written about 10 songs which she re-releases with each new album with new lyrics. Sometimes it works...sometimes it don't.

Great CD by an accomplished artist, well written song lyrics, some "modern" style and old time style songs, entertaining CD and is easy to listen to multiple times.

Just a good, good album with a timeless quality. Welch and her partner, David Rawlings, play and sing with passion and the stories they tell go deep to the bone.

Can't add much to what others who have given this 5 stars. Yes it has dark themes that don't make for a happy go lucky album but the images and feelings the songs give make for an extremely satisfied listen . One of my favourite late night listens

Gute Mischung zwischen Folk und Country. Wer es mag. Ich mag es. Keine hochgezüchteten Stimmlagen, Handmade vom Feinsten.

More low key than Gillian's other CDs but it grows on you and the bluegrass playing is very good. Happier to have it as my previous purchase went astray - was fully refunded it has to be said.
