Somewhere inside Rainy Day Music beats the heart of a very fine folk-rock record. All chiming guitars and flawless falsetto, "Stumbling Through the Dark" captures the classic Jayhawks sound, and mid-tempo rockers "Tailspin" and "Eyes of SarahJane" recall older favorites like "I'd Run Away." "All the Right Reasons" floats on heavenly harmonies and "Save It for a Rainy Day" succeeds with nifty vocal interplay and a bright melodic hook. Yet, even with its share of jangle-pop gems, the disc also offers a few bland strummers that never quite take off. "One Man's Problem" boasts a catchy chorus but a dragging verse, and when chief songwriter Gary Louris hands the reins to drummer Tim O'Reagan or bassist Marc Perlman, the results suffer. The tasty pop treat "Angelyne" and an album-closing acoustic reprise of the opening track help redeem the disc's latter half, but in the end they only hint at how strong an album this might have been. --Anders Smith Lindall

If you're like me and have been pretty bored with most of the new releases coming around nowadays, I highly recommend this album. I purchased it on a whim, along with a bunch of other CDs. I always buy more music than I can reasonably listen to because I like to keep alot of fresh stuff coming in. This CD has been in my player constantly, it is simply that good. The melodies, playing and songs are crafted with excellence. I don't know about all the dragging at the end, I think this album actually plays quite nicely through its duration. Tampa to Tulsa (#12) is an excellent song and really conveys a powerful emotional story of a man on a bus ride awaiting the end of his trip where he plans to propose to his future wife (and the uncertainty of a yes answer included.) "Ease my worried mind and take my hand." It reminds you powerfully of those impacting and definitive moments in your life where the entire world pivots on the outcome of a small set of decisions. Simply great music that you will connect to and listen to often, check it out.

I have always loved this album , but only had it on CD or streaming . Once I received this on 2LP version from Amazon I fell in love with it even more. The way you can hear the separate instruments so clearly is a gift that you never hear from compressed music . I have to thank Amazon for their great packaging care and quick delivery of this product and others I have purchased from them . I have never received an LP record from them that hasn't been in pristine condition , while I haven't been so lucky with other retailers. So if you like the Jayhawks and would love to hear ALL the music , I would highly recommend getting this 2LP record , you won't regret it.

I was surprised when I heard this album...the first Jayhawks CD that I ever had to listen to twice not because I liked it, but to make sure I did. Although the album has 14 tracks, it's technically 13 songs because 1 and 14 are the same. The first time I listened through, I was impressed by tracks 1 through 6, let down by 7, surprised when 8 and 9 made a fine return to pop gem form, then puzzled from 10 to 14. It's not that any of the latter half of the album is bad, but they don't really stand out like the other tracks. Here's how I break it down:
THE STAND-OUT MOMENTS OF POP PERFECTION
Stumbling through the Dark
Tailspin
All the Right Reasons
Save It for a Rainy Day
Eyes of Sarajane
One Man's Problem
Come to the River
Angelyne
Tampa to Tulsa
THE BAD
Don't Let the World Get in Your Way-normally I like Tim O'reagan's songs, but not this time
Madman-I thought some of the demos on the extra disk were
better than this!
THE GOOD BUT NOT QUITE CLASSIC
You Look So Young
Will I See You in Heaven
As you can see, more than half the album is good, so I do feel it is worth the money (and the 3 year wait since SMILE). It's worth the price alone just for "Angelyne." The Jayhawks make heartache sound so pretty.
My advice: if you are confused like I was upon your first listen, give the disc a couple more spins. If the fog hasn't lifted by the third listen, then you probably just arent destined to like the album.
And oh yeah, one more thing: forget about wishing for Mark Olson's return, because he isn't coming back. No matter what lineup the Jayhawks may have in the future, two things will always be certain: there will be Gary Louris and no Mark Olson. For those of you who still whine about his absence, get over it. Louris is a fine songwriter on his own anyway.

The Jayhawks have made plenty of wonderful albums over the years, but "Rainy Day Music" is my favorite of the lot. Although earlier albums such as "Tomorrow the Green Grass" and "Hollywood Town Hall" are considered by most critics --- and more than a few fans --- as the best ones the Jayhawks ever made, my personal favorites are the ones that the band made after Mark Olson left the band, such at this one, "Smile", and "Sound of Lies". The diehard Jayhawks fans will no doubt ridicule such a musically sacrilegious statement, but while I like the early albums very much, and I like Mark Olson, I find that there's just something more magical about the albums with Gary Louris handling lead vocals. And there is lots of magic on this album. Songs that float and soar and caress your heart and soul. Call it Americana, or folk-rock, or country-soul, or whatever you like, this is just excellent music.

Fantastic band

Pretty much one of those perfect little albums. While treading firm ground from the classics of the 60s and 70s, The Jayhawks make this record their own and it shines brightly.

Still remember them playing a few songs on a day it decided to rain at a Minnesota outdoor festival. An incredibly fine band they are, and this is their best record.

The remastering ditches the intense compression from the original, and it can now be heard in all of its dynamic glory. Calling back to The Beatles, The Dead, and others worked so well for the band. Few ascend to such a level of pop beauty.

Listened to this album once through on Spotify and immediately knew I had to buy it. One of those rare albums where every song hit me and I never wanted to skip through a song. I've listened to it over and over again and it's quickly become one of my all-time favorites. I enjoyed their first album as well, but this one is just a stellar overall album.

Disco buenísimo de principio a fin. Es el segundo que compro, el primero lo tuve que regalar a alguien que se enamoró de él, y esta versión trae algún tema más que el que compré en España.
Absolutamente recomendable para los fans de la Americana.
