Bowie is, above all other things, an innovator of music. He's always in with changes in the music scene, often leading the way. This album is no different. He's using bass and beats from the house and trance scene with lyrics and arrangments only Bowie could pull off.
Don't look for Ziggy Stardust here, or even his pop classic style from Let's Dance. No this is something totally different, and that's what makes it great.
You should like this album if you like truely progressive rock like Queen, Pink Floyd, and of course David Bowie, but are willing to be very open minded. The sound is more like a lighter side of Nine Inch Nails or heavy dance mixes. Of course it's hard to ever describe a Bowie album, so listen to the samples. Then if you even have a guess that you might like this, get the CD, it will be way better then you imagined.

This is one of my favorite Bowie albums, a true celebration of the third stage of his career in which he is once again making music to his liking and to his strengths and not catering to the pop charts or to the corporate labels. Every song here is strong and given the space to breathe; there are only seven and so there is no filler or forced material. Standout cuts are "I'm Afraid of Americans", "Seven Years in Tibet" and "Earthlings on Fire", though all are up-tempo and beautifully crafted. I would highly recommend this to Bowie fans and to fans in general of thoughtful and cutting lyrics and rock at its most beautiful.

Been a while since a CD has entertained me this well; and I buy a lot of music. I'm only starting to get into Bowie. Started with "The Day After" and then bought this. I'm hooked, but cautious. Have a friend that's going to lead me through the Bowie list I should like. So, more reviews to come. This CD is filled with hooks, interesting sounds, great vocals, and awesome surprises around every corner. As for the remixes by Moby and NIN added as bonus tracks, well, I like them ... but, Bowie did a fantastic job all by himself.

I remember David Bowie from the 1980's when I was a kid. So I wanted
to listen to an album that I had last remembered him doing.
This album that I have is the 2004 reissue; original album released in 1997
1. Little Wonder - a techno beat that reminds me of the Chemical Brothers
2. Looking for Satellites - eerie sounding tune; the guitars wail on this one
3. Battle for Britain - techno sounding like the Chemical Brothers
4. Seven Years in Tibet - Blues with guitar and drums about Tibet
5. Dead Man Walking - Techno/trance bordering on disco; shades of
Patrick Cowley to me
6. Telling Lies - I think of Marilyn Manson somewhat with this track
7. The Last Thing you should do - techno/disco feel with the chorus in constant loop
at end (if I remember right)
8. I'm Afraid of Americans - deals with the state of life and world
9. Law - Disco/Techno sampling with some Distortion
Bonus Tracks
10. Little Wonder (Danny Saber mix) - a dance mix that I don't like. I prefer the original
11. I'm Afraid of Americans (the N.I.N. 1.0 Mix) - I love this! A heavier sounding version of the original
12. Dead Man Walking (Moby mix) - a Techno loop of words
13. Telling Lies (Adam F Mix) - I like it!
It's interesting that Techno music had not hit the mainstream when this album was released.
One of his more interesting albums. Must listen!

This album was influenced by "Techno". Unfortunately for David his fans didn't seem to want to go with him and the existing fans of the genre didn't embrace this vision. So this album is fairly obscure. The most enjoyable part of following Bowie's career has been all the twists and turns along the way. If you liked Scary Monsters then this ones definitely worth checking out.

This is one of David Bowie's best albums. (I have it in both CD and cassette and I listen to it often. "Seven Years in Tibet," "Dead Man
Walking," "Telling Lies," "I'm Afraid of Americans," and "Law" are breathtaking and stunningly beautiful.

Mission impossible. Je pense donc ne pas me lasser...
