Until a friend who is a huge fan of Richard Hawley called me and told me to get on YouTube and listen to Burnt By the Sun which features his vocals, I had never heard of Sophie Solomon. I was stunned when I heard it and quickly ordered it here after reading something about her background. What an unexpectedly fine bit of music this is!
As other reviewers have stated, the music leans heavily toward Eastern European styles and is played with tremendous energy and panache. I like Poison Sweet Madeira from start to finish. My favorites include Holy Devil, which is about Rasputin; the aforementioned Burnt By the Sun; Lazarus, which features the enchanting vocals of KT Tunstall; the mysterious A Light That Never Dies with it's spoken word interlude by actor Ralph Fiennes reminiscent of the work of Barry Adamson; and the Meditation on Dvorak's Slavonic Fantasy.
The CD is accompanied by a booklet that features pictures and album info but unfortunately no lyrics. If you want to hear something that is fresh and exciting, this is it! I have already bought another copy as a gift I know will be treasured. You should treasure it as well.
