Product Description
With Tripp Lites HDMI Over Cat5/Cat6 Wallplate Extender Kit, you can locate a HDMI enabled display up to 230 ft. away from the HDMI source, using 24Awg, Solid wire Cat5e/6 cabling. The kit consists of a Passive wallplate at the source side, and an Active wallplate (with built-in signal regenerator) at the display side. Simply run two Cat5/6 UTP cables between the two wallplates, and plug in standard Tripp Lite HDMI patch cables to the HDMI source and the display. The Green LED on the Display wallplate lets you know that power and a signal are coming from a connected source. The Red LED indicates only a signal is being received. The kit is functioning properly when the unit is connected to a display and the Green LED is lit. Both Digital Video annd Audio Signals are passed through.

Customers are dissatisfied with the signal quality of the av receiver. They mention that the first Cat6 cable was defective, there is some signal loss, and the transmitter on the second set was defective. The fact that it uses a single CAT cable instead of two makes for poor signal quality. The cable must be solid-wire, 24AWG, and not stranded or smaller diameter.

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
1) I made sure to use the exact same length of cable for the two cat 5e cables. Most cat 5/6 cables have length markings you can use to get this exactly right. My setup was about 40 feet.
2) I would have liked to use cat 6 but the cable was already in the wall. Cat 5e worked fine.
3) I made sure the two wallplates were wired correctly. The one that says "Local" is the source side, or side close to your dvd player. The one that says "Remote" is the display side, or the side by your tv. I found that these plates can sometimes be labeled differently. The one with the two lights is the one that goes closest to the HDTV. The green light will be on when you have both HDMI cables connected to suitable source and display, and the red light when the display is not connected. Sometimes this is listed as an active extender, but there is no power supply hookup required.
4) IN ADDITION, label your two cables (1) and (2) so you can wire them to the correct hookup on each plate. Follow the wiring instructions that come with the plates very carefully. It matters which cable goes where.
5) I put a receiver in between the display side of the wall plate and the HDTV. This did not cause a problem.
Once everything was hooked up properly, IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM. The instructions could be better, but there are youtube videos on this and written help in many places on the web. It is a bit complicated, and I suspect that faulty installation, NOT faulty manufacturing, is to blame for most of the negative reviews. But it is worth it, since this is the cheapest product of its kind from anything like a reputable company. There may be components that don't work with it, but before you junk the wallplates, try the $17 voltage inserter that is mentioned in some of the other reviews--the problem may be with your equipment not being up to spec. I gambled on ordering this and it paid off well. Good luck!
I found I had 2x coax and 2x cat5e cables (23awg) already installed in the duct work, so started looking for the usual hdmi over coax or hdmi over ethernet converters when I stumbled upon these - and as per others on in the comments on this item, I was skeptical about how well these would work.
Given the relatively low cost of these compared to other converters I found, I thought I'd give it a go.
Important things to note:
1. Read Mark Holt's review on this item
2. Length really is an issue, so be mindful they are not made for long distances.
I had initially left my 25ft extension HDMI cable in place from the receiver, to the "local" (read 'source') end end of the tripp lite kit - needless to say on the first power up, not only did the signal not make it to the tv, but there was no power running thru the ethernet line. A quick change of the cable to a 1m HDMI I had laying around resolved this and the signal passed to the tv from the receiver via the Tripp Lite Kit.
Pros:
Works well, hdcp compliant, no lag, easily installed
Cons:
Too early to tell, I will report back, but non found so far.
My installation is fairly straightforward ... the signal comes out of a DirecTV HD Receiver, goes to a signal splitter (one side goes to the back of the TV in our Bonus Room), the other split then runs to the wall plate. On the other end, it's a straight connection from the wall plate to a wall mounted LCD in my office.
I've been using it for about 2-3 weeks now, and overall I'm pretty satisfied. I will probably try a couple of different wall plates or baluns and see if I can eliminate the drop outs.
Several reviewer had suggested that a "power injector" might eliminate the drop outs; I bought one, and it has not made a difference.
For my installation, I VERY CAREFULLY measured three identical 75 foot lengths of CAT6 cable. (I used the third cable to run a separate IR repeater so that I can change the channel from my office.) The cable MUST BE solid-wire, 24awg; if you try using stranded or smaller diameter, you will either not get a signal or get a very bad signal. BTW, I tested this before running the wire thru the walls and attic. By the way, I also tested variances in length of the two cables ... as multiple reviewers noted, it is extremely important that are within 4-6 inches of the same length or it won't work at all, or will only work with poor results.
Use a professional punchdown tool ... the tool they provided in the kit does not do a very good job unless you are VERY CAREFUL. As many reviewers have noted, the integrity of the connections is vitally important.
You should note that the the punchdown blocks on the two plates are reversed ... they are marked well, but you have to pay attention to getting the same wire on one end to the OTHER punchdown block on the other end.
The documentation in the box is not very good, but if you read the various reviews you'll understand all the quirks and constraints.
The result: my installation works, and I get up to a full 1080i (haven't tried to send 1080p) signal over the distance.
One final note on the drop-outs ... some times it will work for hours without dropping, other times it will drop the signal 4-5 times per minute. As I mentioned, a power injector on the source end made NO DIFFERENCE in the drop-outs. I'm going to re-terminate the receiving plate and keep the twists a little closer to the punchdown block. It's annoying, but at least I have the output of the Satellite signal in my office now, and can change channel from my office.
For me, this is work in progress; I will post more comments as I test other configurations.

HDMI signal cuts out periodically. Not enough to be a hassle but annoying still.
