The production value of the game is incredibly high. The voice acting is spot on and the music always fits the occasion perfectly. A lot of people had problems with the story, but I thought it was fantastic. It is true that a lot of characters enter the story only to exit it again at a certain point, but the reasons behind it make sense. The villains remain mysterious but have enough personality that you have reason to oppose them. There are a lot of plot elements that are left cryptic, but enough information is given so the player can figure out what really happened without the writers beating you over the head with the information. I appreciate this style of storytelling.
And since this is an Uncharted game you can expect INCREDIBLE locations, set-pieces, and action sequences. The combat in this game is identical to that in previous games, and the scripted action sequences are just as great as they were in Uncharted 2. If you've seen any commercial of the game you will be familiar with the scene where Drake is on a chain of cargo dangling outside of a moving plane and he must climb back into the plane or else plummet into the desert below him. It is these types of interactive cinematics that make these games so amazing.
Yet as awesome and impressive as these moments are, it is a real shame that almost all of the jaw dropping "wow" moments have already been shown to us in commercials and trailers. I purposely avoided as much information as possible before buying and playing through this game (I pretty much only saw everything up until E3 2011, then stopped). Yet the heavily publicized Burning Chateau, Cruise Ship, and Airplane sequences are easily the best, most intense parts of the game. There are plenty of other cool moments for sure, but it's just unfortunate that there were very few big surprises left in the game.
The Uncharted games receive a lot of criticism for their puzzles being so basic, but I truly appreciated the integration of the puzzles in this game. The puzzles offer a great respite from the frantic action, and a few had me thinking for a while about what I need to do to solve it. Even the puzzles that do not take much time to solve are well designed, so regardless of how difficult you find them to be, all of them are memorable.
I have also heard a lot of people saying this game is too easy, and I respectfully disagree. While I am not a true hardcore gamer, I have played hundreds of titles over the past fifteen years, and this game gave me a lot of challenge. There are plenty of sequences that require you to experiment with different ways of fighting the enemies around you, and I find it hard to believe that so many people claimed to fly through this game even on the normal setting. I honestly think the average person playing this would find the difficulty to be perfect.
As for the multiplayer, it is improved over the second game, but not by much. Yes, there is much more customization, but the core gameplay remains the same. If you weren't very fond of Uncharted 2's multiplayer, it's doubtful this will win you over. I find myself playing it mostly because it's there, not really because I feel compelled to advance through the ranks and become an expert in the online community.
Overall Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is an incredible game and a five-star experience. It is exhilarating to play, always entertains, and will paste a huge smile on your face the entire time. However, like I said, it is unfortunate that almost all of the truly incredible moments have already been shown off to the public in great detail.
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is bound to be remembered as the greatest trilogy in the history of gaming.
Story wise we get some new characters as expected. My favorite being Charlie Cutter. His personality is top notch and he never failed to make me laugh when he cracked a joke, but that's how it is throughout the whole game. You get the usual Uncharted humor, and in my opinion that's one of the best things about the series. They never take themselves overly serious.
However one thing that bothered me was that each of your allies seemed to have an expiration date throughout your adventure. The only one who is with you for basically the whole thing is Sully. Which disappointed me because I would have loved to have Charlie play a bigger role in the game. Plus Chloe and Elena are practically nonexistent for most of it. Speaking of Elena, I don't like the way the developers created her. They slanted her eyes a bit so it gives her kind of an oriental look. And that's not to bash orientals, but she's not oriental.
Graphic wise the game is beautiful, for the most part. There are times during in game cut scenes where they can look kind of washed out. And the "bad guys" don't have much detail, with the exception of Katherine. But during the major cut scenes everything is very crisp and detailed. There is a section where you're in a burning building that I found to be absolutely stunning. It really made me feel as if I was actually in the building myself.
One major thing that I felt was just... amazing, for lack of a better word, is that you get to see a little bit of Drake's past. That whole segment is just pure beauty for any Uncharted fan. I couldn't stop smiling because it was put together so well. That segment, in my opinion, also has the best part of the soundtrack in the game. I didn't want it to end.
Story wise you have to be aware that anything can happen at any second. The writers threw in so many plot twists and surprises that, at least in this aspect, they outdid themselves creatively. However, I found the story as a whole to be less memorable then the two previous games. And one gripe I had was the lack of a major boss fight. There's a small little "fight" at the end, but it didn't match up like the pure adrenaline you got while fighting Zorgan Lazarevic.
Gameplay wise it's more of the same old same old. Sometimes Drake doesn't exactly do what you tell him, or does something really odd when you jump, but that's to be expected in an Uncharted game *laughs*. The hand to hand combat has been expanded. You can now sometimes grab an item, like a pot or something, and hit your enemy. You also now have the ability to grab an enemy and throw him. Another new edition is you now have a throw back ability if a grenade is tossed within your proximity. I kept forgetting it was there, but towards the end I started getting the hang of it. So I found those to all be nice additions.
Some other things that bothered me is that it doesn't tell you whee Charlie came from. To me it looked as if him and Chloe where together, but it was never confirmed. Also they talk about this ring on Elena's hand and they don't tell you where that's from. I was thinking maybe it's an engagement ring, but I didn't see how that would be possible since she was half way across the world. Again it was never explained in further detail. And I'm about 75% of the way done with my Crushing play through and I don't find it nearly as hard as the Crushing difficulties of the previous games.
For my first play through my ending time was 8 hours and 30 minutes. So pretty standard for an Uncharted game. That was only getting 59 out of the 101 hidden treasures.
The multiplayer aspect has been tweaked a little bit as well. You can now customize a character of your own, and you have boosters and kickbacks to make your experience unique. While I love all the additions to the multiplayer I feel like the maps were uninspired. I fell in love with the Uncharted 2 multiplayer maps, but as of now I only really like 2 of the maps in the game. The rest just seem dull.
Overall Score: 9/10 - This game is one to be enjoyed by not only fans of the series, but also those of Naughty Dog and gaming as a whole. There's some nice new features and characters to keep you playing till the end. While I don't feel like the story was amazing, I enjoyed it for what it was and I'm hoping to see answers to some of my questions in the future. The game takes the best of it's previous entries, and we are given a unique and fun experience that I would recommend to anyone.
