Editorial Reviews

Bon Iver's Bon Iver is Justin Vernon returning to former haunts with a new spirit. The reprises are there – solitude, quietude, hope and desperation compressed – but always a rhythm arises, a pulse vivified by gratitude and grace notes. The winter, the legend, has faded to just that, and this is the new momentary present. The icicles have dropped, rising up again as grass.

Justin Vernon's debut album as Bon Iver, 2008's "For Emma, Forever Ago," came in at #47 on my list of the best albums of the 21st century's first decade. When I gave the album a recent listen as a refresher before experiencing his self-titled follow up, I regretted not listing it even higher. For all of its musical simplicity, "For Emma, Forever Ago" is a complex album with lasting charm.

Few songs have ever captured as much beauty as "Re: Stacks" yet Vernon's crystal clear falsetto and softly strummed acoustic guitar are the only two ingredients.

After creating what is now regarded as one of the greatest "breakup albums" in the eyes of many, Vernon formed one of the most unlikely collaborations in music when he joined up with Kanye West to assist in the creation of "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," Kanye's game-changing 2010 release. Kanye's album instantly put Bon Iver back in the spotlight and reignited fans' demand for a new album from the more surprising than ever songwriter.

"Bon Iver" opens with "Perth" which quickly introduces many stylistic changes while keeping Vernon's trademark vocals and unparalleled songwriting very much in focus.

Likely to be mistaken as silence for listeners afraid to turn up the volume, "Perth" opens with a faint recording of a train crossing before a much louder and exceptionally polished electric guitar cuts through. As the song progresses, "Perth" sees the utilization of far more effects than customary for Bon Iver and eventually blossoms into a surprisingly percussive track with a lush instrumentation.

This is not the same Bon Iver that ran off to a hunting cabin to record an album three years ago.

With many of the songs named after locations, both real and imaginary, Vernon paints a brilliant picture of each setting musically with the assistance of Rob Moose's string arrangements and Colin Stetson's horn playing, which both play an important role throughout "Bon Iver."

In the case of "Lisbon, OH," an instrumental, the listeners are forced to use their imaginations to find connections between the small town and each sound effect added to the mix.

Although "Bon Iver" offers many changes and surprises when compared to his simplistic debut, perhaps Vernon's most surprising track, "Beth/Rest," is used as the final number. With a synthesizer part reminiscent of any '80s ballad and vocals more closely resembling Peter Gabriel than Justin Vernon, "Beth/Rest" is a far more confusing closer than "Re: Stacks" was in 2008, but still manages to be just as engaging.

Justin Vernon may have moved on from the heartache heard on "For Emma, Forever Ago," but "Bon Iver" is still ripe with emotion and his songwriting is nearly as powerful now as it was then. Often when artists make such a drastic turn from their original sound, the result is disappointing, but Vernon's use of elaborate instrumentations and experimental effects do nothing to take away from the beauty of his music as a whole.

"For Emma, Forever Ago" is still his crowning achievement, but "Bon Iver" could almost be considered a new beginning for him, making the self-titled name of the album a perfect choice.

plays great, beautiful sound! a 10/10 purchase

I was eager to hear what Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) had up his sleeve after the quiet and haunting For Emma album. This is a more electronic heavier album with the same classic Bon Iver tone. Below are the more noteworthy songs for me.
1. "Perth" 4:22-This is the perfect intro to the album. The guitar is melodic and catchy and introduces the listener to what the rest of the album will be about.

3. "Holocene" 5:37-"And at once I knew, I was not invincible" this line sticks out. It's heavy.

5. "Michicant" 3:45-"I'm biased to this song just because it has my homestate in the title. Originally, I wasn't a huge fan of this song, but the wonderful cover by Kina Granis brought out the nuances of the song that I hadn't noticed before. Overall a very good song

8. "Calgary" - This was the first single off the album, it's a strong more melodic song that is a good demonstration of the rest of the albums feel

10. "Beth/Rest" Justin ends the album taking a complete 180. At first I hated this song. A lot. It is a throwback to the 80's and I've just never been a fan of that style of music. After listening to it several times however, it grew on me. I began to hear other aspects of the song and appreciate what Vernon is doing with his voice.

To every review dripping with arrogant, ignorant, blasphemous hipster snark, please save it. This album is a veritable masterpiece. Justin takes musical textures from the days before digital instruments (much like For Emma) and combines them with textures found more in 80s and modern music, like a REAL synthesizer (It's an instrument. One that you play. It's a Moog, not a computer) and a handful of auto-tuned vocals. He has proven with "Woods" that effects can be used artfully. This is a step forward that he obviously knew all the "retro revivalist," Urban Outfitters hipsters would hate, and I like that. Regarding the songs, they're just gorgeous. Perth is one of my favorites, with beautifully warm electric guitars and striking melodies. The next few tracks continue to cascade over the listener a lush wall of sound that transports you to other musical worlds. That's the point of listening to music, isn't it? Anyway, Holocene is just perfect. The piezo guitar is the first acoustic-electric guitar since the Smiths that I actually thought worked. All of the studio musicians played their instruments, not computers, and the layers of sound make it a really memorable record. In my opinion, For Emma will always be the classic, but to compare the two would be unfair. They are both works of art, with different sonic stories to tell. Stop being arrogant, and ignore the hipsters who refuse to listen, and get yourself a nice vinyl copy (it sounds great). You won't regret a cent.

So everyone likes Bon Iver. His sales are always at the top of charts, and he is rated by people who know music (like the editor's review) very well. So I download his music am extremely confused. I don't like it. But then something strange happens. I listen to it again, and again, and again, and again. Then I ask myself, why do I keep listening to this if I don't like it. But I'm drawn to it like a moth to a flame. I can't explain why I listen over and over and over again. I usually have no idea what he's singing about and it is often only slightly above a cacophony of sound. But I listen, and I am pulled to the way his music makes me feel. There is emotion here that I can't explain and I am always coming back for more. I hope you enjoy this album.

I first listened to Bon Iver what feels like a long long time ago when I heard his song "re:stacks". Thinking back I knew it was something special but it made much more of an impression on me than I would have envisaged any piece of music having. At the time, I remember looking around me whilst this music was playing through my headphones knowing no one else could hear or was experiencing this and thinking "what is this?". Obviously I knew it was Bon Iver, I had bought it and I knew too, the background/story of "For Emma, Forever Ago" and why/how it came to exist. My questioning arose from the experience I was having listening to the music whilst simultaneously observing my surroundings, it was like a psychological "Big Bang" was happening, a moment of intense realisation, clarity, emotion. I never had a "come down" from this wonderful feeling and I actively seek it now, because to me that is life. Having now listened to Bon Iver for many years in so many different situations and circumstances I can safely say he has been a big influence on how I live, how I experience the world around me and how I see myself and my past. I can't think of my past without the music of Justin Vernon, his works evoke so many memories and nostalgia.

This album "Bon Iver, Bon Iver" is pure emotive release from start to finish. I know the order of songs now and really appreciate the combination of sounds and moods that come with a full uninterrupted play through. Every time I put this album on now I can't help but feel as though I have returned to a home I love or visited my closest friend, it just speaks of everything I wish to be and everything I hold closest to me. Music plays a big part in my life and I have other pieces and other artists/composers who move me and inspire me, but very few who I would say sum me up as definitively as Bon Iver, I will always be thankfull to have that.
