I review products professionally, so I see a lot of both high and low quality items crossing my desk. I am not reviewing this product professionally but from one consumer to another. If this review helped your own decision, please click the YES button next to "Was this review helpful”
So I called tech support again. The support guy claimed the reason the printer was failing this way, is because I was using non-supported paper, and that damaged the feed mechanism. Then he said to send it back for a replacement. That seemed really odd for several reasons. First, feeding (god forbid) paper into a printer, shouldn't cause catastrophic failure. Second, with no paper visible anywhere, it appeared to be a sensor problem, not a mechanical feed problem. Third, it makes no sense to REPLACE an item if the intended input CAUSED the problem. The new one of the same design should be expected to break the printer in the same way if his cause claim was right. The only way a replacement would fix the problem long term, is if the specific unit was flawed, rather than paper being the cause as he claimed. So his cause theory and his resolution were diametrically opposed, and then also raised question as to who would be on the hook money wise if a replacement failed.
So I pinned him to the wall on specs, and asked where it was stated I couldn't feed that type of paper into the machine. He pointed me to the "User Manual" online, which lists specs for two types of paper, and names Epson brand paper, then leapt to the notion that if it's not Epson paper, then it's the paper's fault. Except there's this massive problem with that argument, because the front panel has settings for more than two types of paper. The manual and front panel aren't even consistent in the number of types of paper if the doc is a limiting spec. So either there's no way a consumer can use the manual to determine what paper is acceptable, or else the front panel has settings that mislead the consumer to believing other types of paper are allowed that are not. After pointing this out, he used the "not my problem" tactic of saying he doesn't right the manual; he just handles tech support calls.
So I went back to the cause side, and tried, to no avail, to get him to comprehend that when a printer claims there is no paper in the machine, when there is no paper in the machine, it is a SENSOR problem (and sensor problems should not be caused by paper), not a feed mechanism problem that might be causally related to feeding something inappropriate. Furthermore, if feeding paper from a name brand company like Avery, which they should test against, actually does damage the printer, then they have a serious design problem. In all likelihood, it had a sensor failure which has nothing to do with paper.
We then went round in circles over whether if I got an exchange, it would be their dime or mine if it broke again. Because he stuck with his position that he was going to write it up as manufacturing defect, yet was still saying it was my fault for using the type of paper and don't use that paper again.
So I asked to speak to a supervisor. The supervisor pointed me to warranty line item 5 that says ... "5. This warranty does not cover damage to the Epson product caused by parts or supplies not distributed by Epson." Note the words "CAUSED BY". Not "IF YOU USE" ... "CAUSED BY".
Since there had been ZERO engineering root cause analysis on the cause because I still had the printer in my hands, cause could not be known. So I asked whether if after receiving a replacement, I can use the Avery 22802 paper again, and he said no.
He agreed it was a sensor problem, though. So I asked him if paper can cause sensor problems in this printer design, and he said yes. So I asked if it had mechanical sensors or optical sensors, and he said he didn't know. I pointed out that if it had optical sensors, then there is no way that paper could cause the problem, so obviously he can't know whether paper could cause sensor issues in this design or not, and had just made up an answer.
At this point, I reminded him that Epson CANNOT know why this printer failed because they don't have it in their hands yet, in order to do a root cause analysis. Yet their position was already to blame the CONSUMER for feeding (god forbid) PAPER into the printer, and instruct that consumer not to use non-Epson paper again, with zero proof that it caused the problem. This totally blew out of the water, my plans to print on any of a variety of commonly available Avery paper.
The only solution they left me with, was to send it back for a refund. And I'll go back to printing on the under $100 inkjet of another brand that I had "upgraded" from to "save on ink". I think my printer had a one-off sensor flaw that had nothing to do with the paper, but with tech support's position, I couldn't risk trying a replacement. Color me very disappointed.

looking forward to the ink levels dropping at a glacial pace over the next year without the dreaded "ink level low" announcements just when you want to print an important document.
