With the weBoost multiple devices can be amplified at the same time. My wife and I can both text and talk at the same time.
The range of the internal antenna is limited. We found it would not cover more than half the length of our RV. We found it best to place the inside antenna close to where we spend most of our time - between our recliners. If I leave my iPhone in that area with the hot spot activated I have internet access the entire length of our RV and reasonable distance outside.
We spent a fair amount of time trying different inside and outside antenna locations looking for the perfect configuration. Looking for the “miracle”. After a year since the purchase I think I have a better understanding of its operation. While the greater the distance between the antennas the better, you can get them fairly close. I am writing this with the antennas being about 12 feet apart. I think the inside antenna is actually a low power cell tower. Your phone will connect to the tower with the strongest signal, why your need to be in close proximity to it.
Like my old Wilson Amp booster, you have to have some signal for it to work at all. One of our frequent camping locations the phone will only show 1 bar. Amplified I get 2 bars and can stream video as long as too many other camper aren’t on their devices. That’s the cell provider’s problem, not weBoost’s.
Overall, I am satisfied with the weBoost and it’s operation.
Ok, about my experience: My van is well insulated and has a foil radiant heat barrier, so reception inside the van significantly reduced (I also hope to have cell service when camping). When I received the unit, I set it up in my condo (hey, good thing it had an AC power supply!), where I normally get 1-bar service. I put the included antenna on my deck, and I was able to get 5-bars. The signal strength went from -117 dBm/22 ASU to -85 dBm/55 ASU. Not quite as advertised, but I did get 5-bar service. I'm happy with that.
I then swapped the big antenna (that came in the box) for a magnetic vehicle antenna I purchased separately. With the magnetic antenna on my deck, I was able to get a solid 4-bars inside my condo. The signal strength went from -117 dBm/22 ASU to -93 dBm/47 ASU. A very useable result from a much smaller antenna. (I don't have a roof rack or ladder on my van, so mounting the big antenna is a problem. I figure I'll mount it on a pole when I'm camped).
The other day, I had time to kill and 5-bar service outside, and 3- to 4-bars inside the van. Using the booster with the magnetic antenna, I was back up to 5-bars inside. That'll work!
I expect that anytime I'm in an area with even minimal reception, I'll be able to check email, get the weather forecast, and check the news headlines. It does use a fair bit of power, so I plan to keep it powered off unless I'm using it. It's a bit of an expensive toy, but I have grown dependent on cell service and it does work well!
Repeater not a modem:
This device is a signal amplifier not a modem. It uses the indoor and outdoor antennas to act as a bridge between your mobile device or Hotspot to improve a weak signal espically the upstream direction from your phone to the tower. Think of this concept like speaking in a large room. A person at the front of the room often uses a PA system to be heard throughout the room. But an attendee asking question may not be heard due to size of the room. In our example the main speaker is a cell tower and the attendee is a cell device. The WeBoost acts like a cup over the ear to assist in listening and a microphone of your own to be better heard by the tower. The external antenna is much larger with much higher gain than what's in a phone and thus it can hear more clearly and transmit louder. It also helps that the external antenna is placed high off the ground and outside which will both improve signal strength. With this being said most people associate signal strength with higher speeds and while this "can" be true it isn't always the case and often in the cellualr universe it isn't (at least from the perspective of user experince.) In reality, the WeBoost gives a stronger connection that is more stable and thus more usable. In my experience the WeBoost gives me access to cell signal where I was on the boundary of a cell towers radius and the signal just wasn't string enough forcing my device to switch between 2G, 3G, and 4G to find a stable connection. It seems people expect this to behave more like a stand alone modem with external antennas and when it doesn't they become disappointed.
Speeds & MIMO:
If your expecting this to improve speeds, don't.... as I stated above it improves signal strength which "may" improve speed but in all likelihood it will not. In my experience the signal becomes stronger and more stable (fewer dropouts) but I didn't pickup any speed. However my devices do stay connected at 4G LTE as apposed to down stepping to 3G or lower. However there is a speed limiting factor to the WeBoost and that is the fact that its single stream antenna. I don't believe MIMO (multi antenna) is possible with a cell booster. MIMO (multi in multi out) refers to using two or more antennas to increase signal strength and availability throughput. It's often likened to having multipul lanes on a freeway to increase capacity (more lanes = more traffic with less congestion.) However when using the WeBoost you're limited to 1 lane in each direction, This could in fact lower speed in the real world. And because of this fact I believe this is why there are so many negative reviews and unsatisfied customers. The WeBoost isn't a silver bullet to get Netflix streaming without buffering. It's a solution to get cellular internet access where it's unstable or unreliable.
Carriers, 5G, and beyond...
I'm using Verizon on both 4G and 5G devices. There's information on WeBoosts website regarding which channels are supported for boosting. You need to compare that to your cell carriers channel list in your region to see if it will work with your devices. WeBoost states this is 5G ready which is true but only if your carrier is using one of the bands that this device boosts for 5G. But if we're being honest, in areas where you need the WeBoost 5G signals are not likely to reach you as these are in the higher low gigahertz spectrum which don't travel as far. And there is no support of Ultra-wide band 5G which is on the mmWave spectrum. So bottom line from my perspective. If the Weboost gives me consistent 4G service, it's doing its job.
Installs...
Have fun... However you choose, temporary or perminant make sure to test the system before making perminant modifications. Also be aware the amplifier units runs quite hot at about 120 degrees F or 49 C. I do not plan to mount mine and in fact will be adding some spacers to the bottom of the bracket for additional air flow. The inside antenna has an effective range of about 2ft. It will work further but signal drop-off is significant. At about a foot I get a 20 to 25 dB boost. This may not sound like a lot but trust me it is. At 3ft the boost is about 10db. In my testing area I have a signal of about -130db which is unusable. -105 to 110 is much more stable and usable. I've seen -90 which is excellent for this area in rural south eastern Ohio but that's not common.
Overall I'm satisfied with its performance. Not blown away but satisfied. It does what I expected and provides usable internet service where I had none before. I am able to play YouTube videos in most cases without buffering. Large downloads and uploads (>20MB) have completed without failing but do take time. Remember every use case is going to be different. My experince will be different from yours. Everything to do with this device adds a variable. Carrier, location, terrain, number of towers, distance, device, tower traffic, even air conditions and weather. As I said at the outset, this can't be summed up as a "it works or it doesn't" review. If you intend to purchase, I strongly suggest watching video reviews on this product and even then remember those reviews don't have all the answers either. At some point you have to make the call on whether this is a workable solution for your needs or not. It's not going to be a cure all but rather a tool in your arsenal to get you stable internet access via cellualr.
I intend to tether a phone to a travel router I purchased and use that to broadcast wifi. I'll update with my results.
